Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Brick

The gray brick of the warehouse looked damp and ancient under the heavy, overcast Greenwich sky. I killed the Range Rover’s engine, the sudden silence inside the cabin ringing heavily against my eardrums. My fingers were still locked around the steering wheel so tightly that my knuckles ached.

Twenty-five yards away, Wendy had her hand resting firmly on Fiona’s shoulder, guiding her toward the heavy steel entrance. My daughter’s small coat looked far too thin for the biting wind that swept off the harbor.

The man who had opened the door stepped back, holding it wide. He wore a rumpled gray suit that hung loosely on a frame that had once been imposing. He had thinning silver-gray hair, a sharp, aquiline nose, and a faint, jagged scar running from the corner of his left jaw down beneath his collar.

Arthur Vance.

My father-in-law. Jessi’s father. The man who had allegedly suffered a massive, fatal cardiac arrest eight years ago while sailing off the coast of Maine—an event that had devastated my wife, left her mourning for a year, and ultimately brought Wendy to live with us as a grieving widow.

My mind spun backward through the years. I had paid for the memorial service. I had consoled Jessi as she lowered a polished mahogany box into the earth at the family plot. I had comforted her through the dark, sleepless nights when she whispered about how much her father would have loved watching Fiona take her first steps.

And now, here he was, standing in an abandoned industrial yard by the harbor, looking completely alive, if a bit worn at the edges.

I reached for the door handle, my pulse hammering in my throat. But before I could push the door open, Wendy turned her head. Her sharp, calculating eyes swept the street, locking instantly onto the dark Range Rover parked down the block.

She stopped walking. She whispered something sharply to Arthur, and both of them ducked quickly through the steel door, pulling it shut with a heavy, echoing clank.

I didn't hesitate. I threw the door open, sprinted down the cracked concrete sidewalk, and reached the heavy steel door within seconds. I grabbed the cold iron handle and yanked.

Locked solid.
