Chapter 5 - The Monday Morning Trap

By sunrise on Monday, I had spent the entire night mapping out the corporate architecture of Vanguard Ventures, tracing the money lines from my father’s old logistics accounts straight through to the shell companies Lucas and Marcus Vance had established across three different states.

They weren't just stealing an inheritance. They were preparing to file an involuntary bankruptcy petition for my father's firm, saddling the estate with millions in fraudulent liabilities while walking away clean with the liquid capital. And tomorrow morning at 10:00 AM, the final trap was set to close.

At 8:30 AM, my phone rang. It was Lucas, calling via FaceTime.

I let it ring three times, letting my breathing steady, before I swiped to accept the call.

His face appeared on the screen, framed against the bright, sunlit backdrop of a modern, minimalist room with floor-to-ceiling windows. It certainly didn't look like a standard corporate hotel room in Zurich. The palm trees swaying softly in the background were a dead giveaway.

He was in Palm Springs.

"Hey, beautiful," Lucas said, flashing the warm, boyish smile I had fallen in love with six years ago. "Just wanted to check in before my morning meetings start. Did you find those papers in the study?"

"Morning, Lucas," I said, keeping my voice soft, almost fragile, perfectly calibrated to match the grieving wife he expected to see. "I found them. But I have a few questions about page four."

His smile flickered for a fraction of a second—just a microscopic tightening around the eyes—before he smoothly recovered. "Ah, page four is just standard legal boilerplate for international asset transfer. Nothing to worry about. Just sign where the yellow tabs are and scan them over to me. We need them filed before the noon deadline here."

"Right," I murmured, turning the camera slightly so he could see the edge of the desk and the documents laid out before me. "It's just that the name listed as the primary beneficiary on the corporate restructuring isn't your firm. It's Vanguard Ventures. And the address listed for them matches a property in Palm Springs."

The silence on the line was absolute. The background ambient noise of traffic and wind seemed to vanish, replaced by the sound of Lucas’s sharp, sudden intake of breath.

"What did you say?" his voice dropped an octave, the warm, charming facade peeling away like wet tissue paper to reveal the cold predator underneath.

I looked directly into the camera lens, letting the fake tears dry entirely from my face.

"I said, you're not in Zurich, Lucas," I whispered, the phone steady in my hand. "And before you try to log into my portal to execute those signatures yourself, you should know that I've already forwarded my father's original unredacted will—along with your wire transfers to David—to the federal prosecutor's office downtown. They're waiting for my call at ten."

Lucas stared at me through the screen, his expression freezing into a mask of pure, unadulterated shock.

Before he could speak, I tapped the screen and ended the call.
