Chapter 5 - The Unresolved Ledger

By noon, Room 3B was empty. The children had been relocated to the library for an extended reading period under the supervision of the school counselor, while an emergency administrative session convened in the teachers' lounge down the hall.

Ms. Harrow had been placed on immediate administrative leave pending a district tribunal. Principal Vance sat at the end of the long laminate table, looking ten years older than he had that morning, holding a printed copy of Lauren Reed's initial email that he had foolishly ignored twenty-four hours earlier.

"The district will issue a formal, written retraction and apology to Clara," Vance said, his eyes fixed on the grain of the table. "It will be placed in her permanent file, and all records of yesterday's disciplinary action will be expunged. Furthermore... Ms. Harrow will not be returning to this classroom."

Lauren sat beside Ben, her posture still tense, though the white-hot anger of the morning had settled into a cold, protective resolve. "An apology on paper doesn't undo what twenty-two classmates saw, Arthur. The kids who watched her throw that folder into the trash still think Clara lied."

"We are arranging a special assembly tomorrow morning," Vance replied quietly. "At your husband's request, and with the approval of base command, Sergeant Reed will give a brief presentation to the third-grade classes regarding military working dogs and family service. Ms. Harrow's actions will be addressed directly and honestly by the administration."

Ben nodded once. "That's acceptable."

They walked out of the school building into the bright California noon. The parking lot was quiet, the midday heat radiating off the asphalt in shimmering waves. Scout trotted beside them, perfectly at heel, his tail flicking lazily against his flank.

Clara walked between her parents, holding both of their hands. The crushed blue folder was tucked securely under her arm, the red marker lines still visible, but somehow diminished, like a scar on skin that had long since healed.

"Dad?" Clara asked, looking up as they reached the passenger door of Lauren's sedan.

"Yeah, sweet-talker?" Ben said, opening the door and letting Scout hop into the back seat with a practiced thump.

"Do you have to go back to Pendleton tonight?"

May you like

Ben paused. He looked down at his daughter, then across the roof of the car at Lauren, whose expression was unreadable, caught somewhere between the relief of a victory won and the lingering ache of a wound that hadn't quite closed.

Before Ben could answer, his tactical radio—clipped securely to his belt—crackled to life with a sharp, static hiss. A clipped voice broke through the speaker, transmitting directly from the Pendleton operations desk with an updated deployment schedule that wasn't supposed to drop for another three days.
