Chapter 7 - The Interlocking Gears

The morning sun filtered through the high glass windows of my penthouse office, casting long, sharp shadows across the concrete floor. There was no sleep for me last night. While Diane and Brendan sat in separate holding cells downtown waiting for their morning arraignment, my grandfather and Arthur sat across from me mapping out a threat landscape I never knew existed.
"They aren't coming with guns, Cassidy," my grandfather said, leaning over a spread of encrypted corporate filings displayed on the digital conference table. "People like the Zurich syndicate don't operate in the alleys. They operate in boardrooms, regulatory bodies, and hostile equity takeovers. They’re going to try to peel Vane Global away from you brick by brick, using every legal loophole Brendan and Richard left exposed."
I crossed my arms, looking at the structural diagrams of the holding company. "They can't touch the primary voting shares without my digital signature or a unanimous board vote. And I hold seventy-two percent of the voting blocks."
"Normally, yes," Arthur interjected, adjusting his glasses. "However, during your marriage to Brendan, you signed a series of joint marital asset declarations under standard Washington state community property laws—declarations that Richard meticulously drafted and inserted into your pre-nuptial disclosure waivers."
I frowned. "We signed a strict pre-nup. My personal holdings were firewalled."
"They were firewalled against Brendan," Arthur corrected grimly. "Not against a court-ordered receivership. If Richard’s defense attorneys can convince a judge that your asset freeze constituted an illegal preemptive strike against community property, the court could appoint a temporary external receiver to manage your corporate holdings while the fraud case is litigated. And guess who the Zurich syndicate has spent the last six months positioning as their preferred independent receiver?"
A heavy stillness settled over the room.
"Marcus Vance-Smythe," my grandfather said quietly. "My estranged nephew. Your cousin. A man who sold his soul to the European syndicate ten years ago."
The puzzle pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. The water bucket, the humiliating dinner, the embezzlement, the sudden invocation of the Morrison estate—it wasn't just petty domestic cruelty. It was a multi-tiered trap designed to draw me out, tie my assets up in community property litigation, and hand the keys of Vane Global over to corporate raiders who had been waiting thirty years for a crack in our armor.
"They planned this," I murmured, staring at the glowing schematic. "Brendan thought he was just cheating on me with Jessica and skimming off the supply chain. But his father was using him as a pawn to entangle my personal assets with the Morrison estate."
"Precisely," Thomas said, resting his hand on the table. "Which means you have roughly twelve hours before Marcus files his motion for receivership at the King County Superior Court. If he gets that order signed before noon, your control over Vane Global is legally suspended."
I felt the familiar, cold clarity settle into my chest. The fear was gone, replaced by the sharp, electric focus of a chess player seeing three moves ahead.
"We aren't waiting for him to file," I said, standing up from my chair.
Arthur looked up, surprised. "What are you going to do?"

"We’re going to cut the head off the snake before it reaches the courtroom," I said, reaching for my blazer. "Brendan’s arraignment is at nine o'clock. His father is desperate, terrified, and realizes he’s taking the fall for a crime Marcus and Jessica orchestrated behind his back. It’s time to offer Richard a choice."
