Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum Extended

Arthur flinched backward as if my words had physical mass. He looked around the conference room—at Marcus’s unyielding stare, at Nina’s clinical detachment, and finally back at me—realizing that sympathy was a currency no one here was willing to trade in.

"I didn't want to hurt you, Claire," Arthur whispered, his voice dropping to a ragged plea. "In the beginning, maybe it was just an assignment from Vance’s lawyers. But... but I actually fell in love with you. You have to believe that."

I let out a cold, humorless laugh that echoed softly in the quiet room.

"Love, Arthur?" I asked, tilting my head. "Is that what you call laughing with your family about how 'easy' I was? Is that what you call handing me a quitclaim assignment disguised as wedding paperwork while planning to feed my company to a disgraced embezzler?"

Arthur swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. The realization that his lies had completely burned every bridge finally settled over him like lead.

"Here is what is going to happen, Arthur," I said, stepping closer, my voice dropping into a register of absolute authority. "You are going to take your father's legal team, go down to the bankruptcy court, and file a voluntary Chapter 11 reorganization that explicitly severs any and all claims by Richard Vance’s shell companies against Wells Development."

Arthur stared at me in horror. "If I do that, Vance’s people will destroy us. They’ll release the municipal environmental records immediately. I’ll go to prison."

"Then you had better hope you cooperate with my legal team before they do," I replied, turning my back on him and walking back toward the head of the table. "Because right now, Northbridge holds the senior debt on every single asset your family owns. If you comply, my lawyers will structure a clean exit strategy that keeps you out of a federal holding cell. If you don't..." I paused, looking over my shoulder, "...I will personally hand the entire dossier to the United States Attorney before lunch."

Nina slid a single sheet of paper across the polished mahogany toward Arthur. It was a cooperation agreement—a full confession of the syndicate's conspiracy, signed by me as the primary creditor and waiting for a signature on the dotted line.

Arthur looked down at the paper, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold his pen. For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the low hum of the HVAC system overhead.

Then the heavy oak doors of the conference room swung open again.

A tall, silver-haired man in a dark tailored suit stepped inside, accompanied by two private security guards who looked entirely out of place in a corporate office building.

It wasn't Richard Vance. It was Marcus’s senior security lead, looking grim, holding a secure tablet.

"Excuse me, Ms. Chen," the guard said, ignoring Arthur entirely. "We just intercepted a high-priority data transmission originating from the server room downstairs. Someone just attempted to wipe the audit logs for the Briarwood project from our internal network."

The blood in my veins turned to ice.

Arthur looked up from the paper, his eyes widening in sudden, genuine terror. "It wasn't me," he breathed, backing away from the table. "I swear to God, Claire, I didn't authorize a wipe."

"Who has root access to the internal network besides Marcus and me?" I demanded, turning to face my team.

Nina’s face drained of color. "Only one person," she whispered. "Your chief technology officer... David."
