Chapter 3 - The Inheritance of Lies

I stared at the name written in the green leather ledger—Elena Vance—and felt the floor tilt slightly beneath my feet.

Elena. Not Madison.

Madison Vale was a distraction, a shiny, disposable object paraded around high-society galas and Instagram feeds to look like a mid-life cliché. But Elena Vance? Elena was Julianne Vance’s twenty-four-year-old daughter, a quiet, art-school dropout who supposedly lived in a loft in Brooklyn funded by a modest trust fund.

Except the numbers in this ledger didn't represent a modest trust fund.

Over the past thirty-six months, more than four million dollars had been funneled from Mercer Ridge Capital’s secondary reserve accounts directly into a private gallery and real estate portfolio registered under Elena’s name.

My phone rang again. It was Daniel Roth, my attorney.

"Caroline," he said, sounding breathless. "I just got off the phone with Nathan’s personal counsel. They’re threatening an emergency injunction to lift the bank freezes, claiming you’re acting out of irrational emotional distress."

"Let them try," I said, my eyes still fixed on the ledger. "Daniel, I need you to pull public property records in Brooklyn under Elena Vance's name. Specifically commercial real estate purchased between twenty-twenty-two and today."

"Elena Vance?" Daniel paused, processing the name. "Isn't that Julianne Vance's daughter? The major investor?"

"The very same."

"Caroline... if Julianne's daughter is tied up in Nathan's financials, this isn't just a messy divorce or a straying husband. This is a systemic insider diversion of corporate funds. If the SEC or the board finds out, Mercer Ridge won't just be sued—it'll be dissolved."

"Which is precisely why Julianne tried to play cool when I mentioned Madison," I realized aloud. Julianne hadn't been protecting Nathan; she had been protecting her own family's stake in the siphon. "Nathan didn't build this empire alone, Daniel. Or rather, he built it on capital he shouldn't have had access to. The entire foundation of Mercer Ridge was propped up by Julianne filtering institutional money through her own daughter using Nathan as the front man."

"A circular laundering scheme," Daniel muttered, his professional awe bleeding through his fatigue. "My god. If you expose this, you bring down the whole house of cards. Including your own household wealth."

"My household wealth is already gone, Daniel. It was built on sand."

I closed the green ledger with a soft thud and slipped it into my tote bag.

Two hours later, the front gate intercom buzzed.

I walked down the grand curved staircase, my heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. Through the security monitor, I didn't see a courier or a lawyer.

I saw Nathan.

He looked disheveled. His expensive linen shirt was wrinkled, his hair was windblown, and his face was pale under his Caribbean tan. He had flown private back from St. Barts the moment his credit cards were declined, bypassing commercial flights entirely.

He stood on the front porch, staring directly into the security camera lens, his expression twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated fury.

May you like

He didn't wait for me to press the buzzer. He pulled his own emergency key from his pocket, shoved it into the lock, and threw the front door open.

"Caroline!" he shouted, his voice echoing off the high ceilings of the foyer. "Have you completely lost your mind?"
