Chapter 10 - The Ashes of Tomorrow

The crash of collapsing floorboards echoed like thunder through the skeletal remains of the Victorian house, followed instantly by curses and the heavy thud of bodies hitting concrete in the cellar below.

"Claire! Grab my hand!" Dominic yelled over the noise, lunging forward through the swirling cloud of soot and dust.

He caught my arm just as the edge of the floor vault gave way under my boots, hauling me violently back onto stable joists. Martha grabbed my other shoulder, pulling me tight against her chest as we scrambled backward toward the ruined doorway.

Below us, in the dark pit of the basement, Vance groaned, coughing violently as he tried to untangle himself from the splintered beams. The mechanical whine continued to pulse, and suddenly, a harsh amber light flickered on across the cellar walls, illuminating banks of blinking electronic equipment and a heavy steel vault door that had just unlocked itself automatically.

"He didn't build a trap," Martha whispered, staring down in absolute shock. "He built a panic room."

Dominic kept his weapon trained on the hole in the floor, his breathing heavy. "Vance! Stay down, or the next drop won't be into a cellar!"

A muffled curse rose from the darkness, followed by the sound of sirens wailing in the distance—faint at first, but growing louder by the second as Chicago police cruisers and federal marshal units converged on the address.

"Your security detail called the marshals," Martha realized, looking at Dominic with wide eyes.

"I called them the moment we left the mansion," Dominic replied smoothly, keeping his eyes locked on the pit. "Vance played his hand. He thought he was hunting ghosts, but he just walked straight into a federal sting operation backed by every prosecutor in Illinois."

Ten minutes later, the ruined house was flooded with the harsh red and blue glare of emergency lights. Federal agents swarmed the property, hauling Marcus Vance and his remaining men out in handcuffs through the freezing snow.

I stood near the front porch, wrapped in a thick wool blanket that one of the medics had handed me, watching the flashing lights reflect off the pristine snow. Sophie was safe, wrapped in Miller's arms inside the warm SUV parked down the street, still sleeping through the chaos that had just reshaped our universe.

Footsteps crunched on the snow behind me. I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

Dominic walked up beside me, slipping his hands into his coat pockets. He looked tired, the hard edges of his legendary armor softened by the exhaustion of the night.

"The federal prosecutors have everything they need," Dominic said quietly. "Vance's network is dismantled. The syndicate's assets are frozen. And your father's ledger is safely in government custody, along with enough evidence to clear Thomas Bennett's name once and for all."

I looked up at him, the bitter wind stinging my cheeks. "My father was never a traitor."

"No," Dominic agreed softly. "He was a hero who made a lot of dangerous enemies to protect the people he loved."

A moment later, Martha walked over, standing a few feet away. The tension between us was still raw, heavy with eleven years of grief and deception, but as she looked at me, the desperate panic in her eyes was finally gone.

"I'm staying in Chicago," Martha said softly, her voice trembling slightly. "For as long as you'll let me... to learn how to be a grandmother."

I looked from my mother to Dominic, then back out toward the glittering lights of the city skyline stretching out beyond the frozen lake. The war was over. The lies were stripped away. For the first time in my life, I wasn't running, I wasn't hiding, and I wasn't cleaning up someone else's mess.

Dominic reached out, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my forehead, his dark eyes lingering on mine with a quiet, unmasked warmth.

May you like

"Come home, Claire," he said softly. "Both of you."

I didn't answer with words. Instead, for the first time since we met, I smiled—and reached out to take his hand.
