Chapter 5 - The Hidden Passage

The movement was too fast for the human eye to track.

With a deafening roar that shook the pantry walls, Dante lunged forward. A muffled thump echoed as his gun discharged into the ceiling, but the bullet was unnecessary. Dante slammed the intruder against the stone counter with bone-crushing force, knocking the pistol from his grip and sending it skittering across the tile floor.

The man hit the counter and went limp instantly, sliding down into a crumpled heap against the cabinets.

“Sophia!” I cried out, rushing forward and snatching my daughter from the falling man’s arms, pulling her tightly against my chest. She buried her face in my neck, sobbing uncontrollably. “Are you okay? Did he hurt you?”

“He was mean,” she hiccuped, her small fingers clutching the fabric of my uniform. “He grabbed me too hard.”

Dante stood over the unconscious intruder, his chest heaving, his knuckles bruised and bleeding. He didn't look at the man. His dark, furious eyes were fixed on the open service door, scanning the dark perimeter outside where the estate lights flickered against the driving wind.

“Mateo!” Dante roared, his voice carrying through the intercom system wired into the walls. “Get the outer detail on high alert! We have a breach! Sweep the perimeter and lock down every gate!”

Within seconds, heavy footsteps echoed from the hall as Mateo and three armed guards rushed into the pantry. Mateo took one look at the unconscious intruder and then at Dante’s murderous expression.

“Get him down to the basement holding room,” Dante ordered coldly. “Find out who gave him the security codes to the service wing. Nobody gets past the outer gates without a pass unless someone on the inside let them in.”

“Right away, Boss,” Mateo said, signaling two guards to haul the captive away.

Dante turned back toward me and Sophia. His expression softened just a fraction when he saw my daughter crying against my shoulder, but the dark shadow in his eyes had deepened. The attack proved one terrifying reality: the secrets my grandmother left behind weren't just old history. They were still alive, still dangerous, and people were willing to kill a three-year-old child to get them.

“Rosa,” Dante said quietly, stepping closer. “Take her upstairs to the master suite. It’s the most secure room in the estate. You’ll be safe there.”

“I’m not staying here, Mr. Falcone,” I said, my voice shaking with a mix of adrenaline and newfound fury. “You brought us into this. You and your dead wife’s secrets! My grandmother left this place for a reason, and now my daughter is a target because of a ghost story!”

Dante didn’t flinch away from my anger. Instead, he reached out and gently touched Sophia’s ankle, soothing her crying. Then he looked up at me, his gaze fierce, unyielding, and absolute.

“Your grandmother didn't just leave a ghost story behind, Rosa,” Dante said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “She left a map. And the key to finding it isn't in my study.”

He reached out and pointed a steady finger directly at the heavy, locked mahogany doors at the end of the corridor—the sitting room that had remained sealed for eighteen months.

“It’s behind those doors.”
