Chapter 10 - The Unfinished Thread

By evening, the hospital room had been cleared of police officers, attorneys, and frantic family members. The room was quiet again, bathed in the soft amber glow of the bedside lamp. My father and Megan had gone home to get some rest, promising to return in the morning, leaving me alone with the steady, rhythmic hum of the fetal monitor.
My phone rested on the bedside table. It had stopped buzzing with frantic notifications hours ago.
Eric was being held without bail at the county detention center, facing charges ranging from grand larceny and corporate embezzlement to bigamy and domestic endangerment. The legal team assured me that his assets—what was left of them—would be frozen and restored through the courts. The house would be returned to my name through an expedited emergency settlement.
And yet, despite the overwhelming sense of relief that settled into my shoulders, sleep refused to come.
The door to my hospital room clicked open softly. I expected a nurse coming in for a routine check, but instead, Sarah stepped inside, holding a white paper bag from the bakery down the street.
"I figured you were sick of hospital broth," she said softly, setting the bag on the tray table.
"Thank you," I said, offering a small, tired smile. "How are you holding up?"
"Better than I have in five years," Sarah replied, pulling up the vinyl chair. "The detective called. They found a ledger in Eric's safety deposit box. It wasn't just my custody case or his firm's accounts. There were names of other people—clients, business partners, investors—tied up in offshore accounts that the firm didn't even know existed."
I looked at her, the quiet weight of the revelation sinking in. "He wasn't just hiding a second family from you and me," I whispered. "He was running a systemic operation across multiple states."
"Which means the investigation is only in its first chapter," Sarah said, her voice steady. She reached into her bag and pulled out a small, handwritten envelope that had been tucked inside the police property inventory list. "The detective asked me to give this to you. It was in Eric's personal pocket when they booked him. It's addressed to you."
I stared at the heavy cream envelope. The handwriting was unmistakably Eric's—neat, controlled, and sharp.
"Do you want me to throw it away?" Sarah asked gently, sensing the hesitation in my hands.
May you like
I looked at the envelope, then down at my hands resting gently over my swollen stomach. Eric's physical control over my life was over. He was behind bars, his lies exposed, his empire dismantled. But looking at that final piece of paper, I realized that understanding the full scope of what he had built wasn't about him anymore—it was about making sure no part of his shadow could ever touch my child.
"No," I said, reaching out to take the envelope. "Let's see what else he thought he could hide."
