Chapter 10 - The Horizon

The morning news broadcast played quietly on the wall-mounted screen in the Coral Gables living room while Noah and Lily ate their pancakes at the kitchen island.
On screen, the cameras flashed blindingly outside the grand double doors of the Carter Logistics headquarters in Atlanta. Ryan stood at the podium, his tie slightly crooked, his face pale and drawn under layers of makeup, attempting to project an image of dignified resilience.
"Due to unforeseen macroeconomic pressures and malicious internal breaches of fiduciary duty," Ryan said into the forest of microphones, his voice tight with suppressed panic, "Carter Logistics is undergoing a temporary restructuring. We intend to protect our investors, our employees, and—"
"Mr. Carter!" a reporter shouted from the front row, waving a printed document in the air. "Is it true that the primary commercial warehouse district holding your inventory has just been legally severed from the corporate registry by your ex-wife, Elena Carter?"
Ryan froze mid-sentence. The color drained entirely from his face.
On screen, his mouth opened, but no words came out. He stared blankly at the reporter, the illusion of control shattering completely under the blinding flashbulbs.
In the kitchen, Lily looked up from her plate, pointing a small plastic fork at the screen.
"Look, Mommy! That's Daddy's office building on TV."
"Yes, sweetie," I smiled, walking over to brush a stray curl from her forehead. "Come on. Let's get your shoes on. We have a flight to catch this afternoon."
Julian walked in from the study, holding his phone against his ear. He clicked the call closed and looked at me with a satisfied nod.
"The trust transfer is fully registered in Georgia," Julian said. "The warehouses are generating steady commercial lease revenue from three separate logistics firms. You and the children are completely financially secure for the rest of your lives."
"Thank you, Julian," I said, picking up my travel bag. "For everything."
"Not at all," he smiled faintly. "Though I suspect your legal battles aren't entirely over. Arthur Vance sent a secure message five minutes ago."
I paused, raising an eyebrow. "Oh? What did my cousin want?"
"He said now that the corporate nonsense is settled, he’d like to invite you to dinner next time you're in Atlanta," Julian said, his eyes twinkling with dry amusement. "Apparently, he wants to discuss a joint philanthropic foundation focusing on independent family estate trusts."
May you like
I laughed softly, shaking my head as I reached for Noah's dinosaur backpack.
"Tell Arthur my calendar is quite full for the next decade," I said, taking my children by the hand as we walked out the front doors into the warm, bright Miami sunlight. "We have a brand-new life to build."
