Chapter 8 - The Counter-Strike

The morning air outside the Vance Construction offices was crisp and biting. By 8:00 AM, the parking lot was already crowded with project managers, equipment operators, and three unmarked state vehicles belonging to the Department of Environmental Protection and the state revenue division.

When my sedan pulled up alongside Arthur’s truck, Claire stepped out first, adjusting her utility jacket. I followed, carrying the leather portfolio containing the unassailable paper trail. Arthur stayed back in the vehicle, keeping watch, though his presence felt like an anchor we didn't strictly need anymore.

Julian was standing near the front glass doors, his face pale, tie loosened, arguing frantically with two men in dark suits who flashed government identification badges. Evelyn was sitting rigidly inside the reception area, her purse clutched in her lap like a shield against an invading army.

When Julian saw me walking toward the entrance flanked by Claire, he stopped mid-sentence. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving his skin a sickly, mottled gray.

"Claire?" he whispered, his voice cracking as if he were looking at a ghost. "What are you... how did you get here?"

"Hello, brother," Claire said smoothly, stopping a few feet from him. "Did you really think you could empty the operating accounts and run to the Caymans without anyone noticing the audit trail leading back to our father’s estate?"

Julian turned his panicked gaze from his sister to me, his eyes wide with desperate fury. "Sloan! You absolute lunatic—you froze the accounts? Do you have any idea what you've done? The payroll is locked, the state inspectors are inside, and every commercial lender we have is calling my phone!"

"I know exactly what I've done, Julian," I said, stepping past him into the lobby without breaking stride. I addressed the two state investigators standing by the reception desk. "Good morning. If you're looking for the person who authorized the fraudulent environmental compliance reports and the offshore asset transfers, you can start with the master administrator credentials. But before you do that, I have certified copies of every shadow ledger, false tax filing, and forged medical document executed under this roof for the past three years."

Evelyn stood up from her chair, her face contorted with rage. "Don't listen to her! She’s a bitter, unhinged ex-wife who was legally dismissed from this company for incompetence! She’s fabricating everything!"

"Is she, Mrs. Vance?" one of the investigators asked, pulling a thick folder from his briefcase and opening it to a glowing digital signature block. "Because the cryptographic hash on these false wetland permits matches the primary system administrator key. And according to the corporate charter on file, that key belongs exclusively to Ms. Montgomery—who formally revoked your son’s override authority forty-eight hours ago."

Julian staggered back a step, colliding with the edge of the reception desk. The invincible builder, the successful provider, the man who had casually thrown a suitcase into the rain while smiling like he was returning a defective product, was entirely gone. In his place stood a cornered, small-minded fraud who had finally run out of other people to sacrifice.

"You can't do this," Julian choked out, looking at me with a mixture of terror and pleading. "We were married, Sloan. We can fix this quietly. Just drop the charges—we'll give you whatever settlement you want."

I stopped in front of him, looking down not with anger or triumph, but with a cold, absolute clarity.

May you like

"The settlement was two million dollars and the Fourth Street property yesterday, Julian," I said softly, loud enough for every employee in the open-plan office to hear. "Today, the price is everything."
