Chapter 5 - The Departure

Ethan watched, paralyzed, as his wife took Declan Pierce’s arm.
The image was so surreal, so utterly disconnected from the reality he thought he commanded, that his brain refused to fully process it. His wife—the woman who had made tea for him every morning, who had laughed at his corporate jokes, who was carrying his child—was walking out of an executive suite on the arm of America’s most ruthless billionaire, having just legally erased Ethan’s existence from the balance sheet.
“Grace!” Ethan shouted, taking a desperate step forward as the group moved toward the private elevators.
The two security guards moved instantly, their broad shoulders forming an impenetrable wall between Ethan and his departing wife.
“Don't, Mr. Calloway,” the larger guard warned quietly.
Grace didn't look back. She stepped into the elevator car, her emerald dress rustling softly against the dark wood interior. Declan followed her inside, his hand pressing the button for the ground floor. As the brass doors began to slide together, Grace’s eyes met Ethan’s one last time through the narrowing gap.
There was no triumph in her expression. No anger, no satisfaction, and no lingering affection. Just the quiet, absolute finality of a ledger that had been balanced to the last decimal point.
The doors clicked shut.
Ethan stood alone in the hallway, the silence pressing down on him with crushing weight. Arthur Vance walked past him toward the stairs without a word, his footsteps fading away into the carpeted expanse of the ninth-floor corridor.
From down the hall, the soft click of a door opening revealed Vanessa standing nervously in the doorway of suite 905, her face pale, her red silk dress catching the harsh fluorescent light.

“Ethan?” she whispered timidly. “What... what do we do now?”
Ethan didn't answer. He looked down at the single sheet of paper clutched in his trembling hand, realizing for the first time that his credit cards were frozen, his corporate access was revoked, and the woman who owned his entire future was currently descending into the lobby of a luxury hotel in a car paid for by a man who didn't lose investments.
