Chapter 10 - The Morning After

The sun was just beginning to streak pale, golden light across the horizon when I pulled our Subaru into the driveway of our suburban home.
The house was quiet, peaceful, and entirely mine.
When I unlocked the front door, the familiar scent of lavender and baby powder drifted down the hallway. I hurried straight to the nursery. Hailey was still sleeping soundly in her crib, her tiny chest rising and falling in a soft, even rhythm, completely untouched by the wreckage of the world outside.
I leaned over the railing, pressing a gentle kiss to her warm forehead, feeling a thick wave of emotion swell in my chest. We had survived. The storm had come, and instead of tearing us apart, it had cleared the air entirely.
Later that morning, the doorbell rang just as I was finishing a cup of coffee at the kitchen island.
I walked to the front door and pulled it open.
My mother stood on the porch, holding a brown paper bag smelling of fresh cinnamon rolls from the bakery down the street. Her eyes were red-rimmed and heavy with worry, scanning my face as if she expected to find me in pieces.
"Clara, honey," my mother said softly, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation and pulling me into a tight, fierce hug. "Liam’s mother called me an hour ago. She was crying, saying the police were at their house, that Liam was fired, that... Clara, what on earth happened last night?"
I pulled back gently, offering her a calm, steady smile, and motioned for her to follow me into the kitchen.
"Sit down, Mom," I said, taking the bag of cinnamon rolls and setting them on the counter. "I'll make some fresh coffee. And I'll tell you everything."
As I poured the water into the kettle, my phone buzzed on the counter beside me.
I glanced down at the screen. It wasn't Liam. It wasn't Marcus Vance.
It was an email notification from the county land registry office, confirming the electronic filing of the quitclaim deed for the downtown condominium. The property ownership had been successfully transferred out of Apex Holdings and into a newly registered private trust.
The primary beneficiary of the trust wasn't the firm, and it wasn't Liam.

It was listed simply as: Clara Foster.
A quiet, slow smile spread across my face as I set the phone down and turned to face my mother, ready to start the rest of our lives.
