Chapter 6 - The Transfer Order

The paper felt impossibly light in my fingers, yet the weight of its implications pressed down on me with suffocating force.

Civilian administrator of the South China Sea drone grid. Overseeing the transition of my mother’s stolen patents back into military hands under direct oversight from the Joint Chiefs. And the appointment had been signed off by Arthur himself.

"You're asking me to step into a minefield," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy air of the briefing room. I kept my eyes fixed on Deputy Secretary Thorne, refusing to look at my father. "You want an active-duty colonel to manage a civilian defense acquisition that your own board has spent six months trying to discredit."

"It’s not a request, Colonel," Thorne replied evenly, leaning back in his chair. "The Secretary of Defense signed the order twenty minutes ago. Given your operational background in the Pacific theater and your technical familiarity with the guidance system architecture—knowledge, I might add, that was brought to light through today's security filings—you are uniquely positioned to audit and restructure the procurement process."

Arthur finally shifted, clearing his throat. The blustery, untouchable CEO was gone, replaced by a graying man who looked every bit of his seventy-two years. "The board will fight this in federal court within forty-eight hours, Thorne," Arthur said, his voice raspy. "You know that. They'll claim a conflict of interest. They'll claim Kate used her military position to orchestrate a hostile seizure of corporate assets."

"Let them try," Julian chimed in from the corner, his legal calm returning as he adjusted his glasses. "The moment Arthur voluntarily transferred the patents under Section 4-B of the Defense Production Act to resolve the hardware vulnerability claims, the board's standing evaporated. They can sue the Department of Defense if they like, but they won't win."

I looked from Thorne to Arthur, the cold reality settling over me. This wasn't a promotion, and it wasn't an olive branch. It was a containment strategy. Arthur had handed over the very thing he had built his empire on—or rather, the stolen foundation of it—because the alternative was a public scandal that would land half his board in a federal penitentiary for patent fraud and data suppression. And he had used me to do it, because I was the only person with the rank, the clearance, and the bloodline to absorb the shockwave.

"And Trevor?" I asked suddenly, the image of my arrogant stepbrother flashing in my mind. "Where does he fit into this corporate restructuring?"

Arthur's jaw tightened. A flicker of genuine pain crossed his eyes before he masked it with his habitual coldness. "Trevor was never meant to run Mercer Tech, Kate. He was a placeholder. A security blanket Evelyn and the board pushed on me because they thought I needed an heir who wouldn't ask questions about where the software came from. He's stepping down from the executive board tonight."

"And Evelyn?" I pressed.

"Evelyn has already retained divorce counsel," Julian answered smoothly, offering a thin, humorless smile. "The moment the transfer order hit the wire, her legal team realized the Mercer fortune was about to become the subject of a federal audit. She’s flying to Zurich on the midnight flight."

I stood up, sliding the transfer order into my briefcase. The uniform felt different now—not an armor against my past, but a tool to dismantle it. "I'll take the assignment, Secretary Thorne. But I'm doing it on my terms. Every single line of code my mother wrote twenty-six years ago is going to be audited by independent engineers. No corporate filters. No hidden contingency funds."

Arthur looked up at me, a strange, complex expression crossing his face—part dread, part a bizarre, twisted flicker of pride. He didn't try to stop me as I turned toward the heavy oak doors.

"Kate," Arthur called out just as my hand touched the brass handle.

I paused, looking back over my shoulder.

"Your mother left a physical notebook," Arthur said quietly, his voice barely audible over the hum of the ventilation system. "The complete unredacted algorithms. Julian has it in the Wilmington safe deposit box. You'll need it if you're going to fix what we broke."
