Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Thread

The red-and-blue flash of federal cruisers painted the Georgian brick of the Moretti estate in violent, rhythmic strokes. Inside the ballroom, the muffled sound of panic began to rise as guests pressed against the tall glass windows, watching the armed federal agents fan out across the snow-covered lawns.
Enzo didn't reach for a weapon. He simply pulled a burner phone from his pocket, pressed a single pre-programmed speed-dial button, and listened for two seconds before looking up at me.
“The North River manifests have been decrypted,” Enzo said calmly. “Not by the DOJ. By our own internal audit servers. Your father’s emergency backup drive just unlocked itself in Zurich.”
“And what’s on it?” I asked, keeping my arm protectively in front of Sophia as the first federal squad car crunched up the gravel driveway toward the service bay.
“Everything,” Enzo said, a faint, grim smile touching the corner of his mouth. “Not just the Vitale family’s corruption files, but the complete record of every federal prosecutor, judge, and state senator who took payouts from both sides of the bay over the last twenty years. Richard Vitale didn't just build a cage for us, Dominic. He built a guillotine—and by triggering this raid tonight, he just walked right under the blade.”
Isabella stared at Enzo, the blood draining completely from her face. “That’s impossible. My father’s records were encrypted with a military-grade protocol. No one outside our family had the key.”
“Your father forgot one detail,” I said, turning to face her with a cold, steady gaze that left no room for negotiation. “He left the master recovery seed in the safety deposit box in Astoria—the one Sophia had the duplicate keys to all along.”
Sophia looked down at her hand, where her fingers were still tightly laced with mine. The cold was gone, replaced by a sudden, fierce warmth that had nothing to do with the winter weather and everything to do with the truth finally coming home.
As the lead federal vehicle ground to a halt ten feet away and agents in heavy tactical gear began stepping out into the snow, the heavy oak doors of the service entrance pushed open behind us.
Little Lily stood in the doorway, wrapped in a oversized wool blanket handed to her by the nurse, clutching her scuffed black shoes in one hand and looking out at the flashing lights with wide, curious eyes.
She didn't look scared. She looked like a Moretti—unyielding, observant, and waiting for her next move.
I walked back across the platform, scooped her up into my arms, and held her tight against my chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of her heart against mine.
The engagement party was over. The empire my mother built on secrets and lies was crumbling beneath the federal snowstorm. But as I looked down at Sophia standing beside me, the missing pieces of the last four years finally locking into place, I knew one thing with absolute certainty:
The game was over, and we were finally going to write our own rules.
