Chapter 7 - The Midnight Consultation

The house on Maple Street was dark, save for the single amber reading lamp glowing behind the lace curtains of the second-floor study. When Thomas and I climbed the creaking wooden steps of the wrap-around porch, the front door swung open before I could even raise my hand to knock.
Aunt Elena stood in the doorway, leaning slightly against a polished cherrywood cane, her silver hair pulled back into a severe, immaculate bun. At seventy-four, her eyes were as sharp and piercing as they had been when she used to cross-examine sitting governors on the federal bench.
"You smell like trouble, Marcus Vance," she said, her voice dry and gravelly as she stepped back to let us into the foyer. "And your brother smells like federal coffee and panic. Come into the kitchen. The kettle is already on."
We followed her down the narrow hallway into a kitchen that looked like it hadn't changed since 1994. Stacks of leather-bound case law reports towered against the walls, and a vintage radio played low-volume classical music in the corner. She poured three cups of black tea with steady, practiced hands before motioning us toward the oak table.
"I saw the local news alert about your backyard visitor this afternoon," Elena said without preamble, setting the ceramic pot down. "Donald Miller is a blunt instrument. If Arthur Callahan is sending local deputies to rattle your fence, it means you've finally stopped tripping over the loose stones and started pulling up the foundation."
I pulled the micro-cassette and the printed transcripts from my briefcase and laid them flat on the kitchen table between our teacups. "He didn't just send deputies, Aunt Elena. He locked down our client trust account tonight using a forged judicial directive, and he's threatening to release a deepfake audio archive that paints me as the co-conspirator in the juvenile fund embezzlement from ten years ago—the exact case you were forced to retire over."
Elena didn't touch the papers immediately. She looked down at them, her expression softening into a deep, heavy sorrow that I had rarely seen in her.
"Arthur was my most brilliant clerk," she murmured softly, tracing the rim of her teacup. "I trusted him with my court, with my files, with my reputation. When I started investigating where those federal juvenile grants were actually vanishing, he didn't just disagree with my findings—he systematically dismantled my administrative authority until the circuit council had no choice but to push me out under the guise of health concerns."
"He thinks he's untouchable now because he controls the paper trail," Thomas said, leaning forward. "Marcus has the original micro-cassette from their first meeting, but the banking system won't touch a federal wire reversal without an active appellate injunction. And every judge in the district is in Callahan's pocket."
Elena looked up, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce intelligence that instantly swept away the frailty of her years. "Then it's a good thing appellate rules committee emerita status doesn't require district court permission to review a fraudulent emergency directive."
She reached out, picked up the printed copy of the judicial wire transfer order, and scanned the signature block with surgical precision.
"Look right here, boys," she said, tapping her fingernail against the bottom of the document. "Arthur was always arrogant about his Latin formatting. He used the archaic phrasing nunc pro tunc on a civil asset seizure order—a procedural error that hasn't been valid in federal equity law since the 1980 judicial reforms. A first-year law student would catch it."
"Which means the wire transfer directive is legally void on its face," I realized, the pieces locking into place.

"It means," Elena said, a thin, dangerous smile touching her lips, "that with my signature as an appellate committee member certifying this document as an illegal judicial usurpation, every single dollar of your client trust funds will be unfrozen by the federal reserve clearinghouse the moment the electronic seal hits their server at 8:00 AM tomorrow."
