Chapter 7 - The Audit Trail

By four o'clock that afternoon, Clara and I were sitting at the heavy oak dining table in my kitchen, surrounded by three laptops and a mountain of printed bank statements. Ethan had gone back to his dorm to pack a bag, needing space to process the sheer scale of the deception that had defined his entire upbringing.

The house was completely silent except for the rhythmic clack of keys as Clara navigated the encrypted corporate database Thomas Gable had helped me mirror onto an external drive.

"Look at this," Clara murmured, spinning her laptop around so the screen faced me. "This isn't just about the eight properties Victor signed over last night. This is an ongoing siphon."

I leaned in, squinting at the spreadsheet. Rows of digital transfers, each ranging between ten and twenty-five thousand dollars, were funneled out of Sterling Holdings every month under the benign ledger heading of Consulting Services: Vance Associates.

"Melissa isn't a passive recipient," I said, a cold realization settling into my stomach. "She was billing the company for services that were never rendered."

"She’s been doing it since before Victor got sick," Clara said, adjusting her glasses. "Look at the routing numbers. The money isn't going into a personal savings account for Julian's education. It's landing in an international commercial account registered in the Cayman Islands under a holding company called Vance & Sterling Enterprise."

I stared at the screen. For thirteen years, I had believed Melissa was simply a domestic complication—a mistress kept in a comfortable apartment by a weak, unfaithful husband who wanted a second life without the mess of a divorce. But seeing the corporate routing numbers laid out before me, the picture shifted entirely.

This wasn't just an affair. It was a business partnership built on systematic embezzlement.

"Does Arthur Vance know about this?" I asked, looking up at my sister-in-law.

Clara let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Arthur Vance is the legal architect of the entire scheme. He didn't just draft the property transfers; he set up the shell companies that allowed Melissa to legally drain corporate reserves without raising red flags during annual audits."

I stood up from the table, walking over to the window that looked out onto the quiet, tree-lined suburban street. The sun was dipping below the horizon, casting long, bruised shadows across the lawn.

"If Arthur Vance knew he was laundering corporate funds, why did he back down so easily this morning?" I asked aloud, more to myself than to Clara. "When I threatened him with fraud charges, he folded in five minutes. A lawyer deep in a multi-million-dollar corporate embezzlement scheme doesn't just hand over the keys because a wife makes a phone call."

Clara frowned, spinning her chair around. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying Arthur Vance realized something this morning that we haven't figured out yet," I replied, turning back to face her. "He didn't surrender because he was scared of me. He surrendered because he wanted out of Victor's orbit before the whole thing collapsed."

My cell phone buzzed on the kitchen island. It wasn't the hospital. It was an unknown local number with a downtown area code.

I picked it up on the second ring.

"Mrs. Sterling?" a crisp, professional voice asked.

"This is Elena Sterling."

"My name is Detective Miller with the city financial crimes division. I’m calling because we received an anonymous tip this morning regarding suspicious asset transfers and corporate encumbrances tied to Sterling Holdings. We’re currently reviewing several high-value transactions involving an individual named Melissa Vance. I need you to come down to the precinct tomorrow morning to answer a few questions regarding your husband's business practices."

The kitchen seemed to grow several degrees colder.

"Detective," I said, keeping my voice perfectly steady. "Before I answer any questions, I should inform you that I am already represented by legal counsel, and my name is the primary lienholder on every corporate asset in question."

"I'm aware of your filings, Mrs. Sterling," Detective Miller replied smoothly. "Which is why we want to speak with you before we issue an arrest warrant for corporate fraud and embezzlement against both Melissa Vance and your husband."
