Chapter 8 - Confrontation at the Salon

By Thursday afternoon, word had somehow bypassed the legal channels and found its way back to Vineville Avenue.

I was standing behind my salon station cleaning my shears when the front bell chimed. I didn't even need to look up in the mirror to know who had walked in.

It wasn't Dale. It was Ashley.

She looked entirely different from her usual polished Thursday self. Her hair was unstyled, her makeup was minimal, and her eyes were red-rimmed and frantic. She walked past the waiting area and stopped directly at my station, her hands trembling.

“Miss C,” Ashley whispered, her voice cracking. “Is it true?”

I slowly laid my shears down on the tray. “Is what true, Ashley?”

“The business... the lawsuits... the house.” She gripped the edge of my styling chair as if she needed it to keep from falling. “Dale hasn't answered his phone since this morning. Some man served papers at his office yesterday, and now my Lexus lease payment was declined at the dealership an hour ago.”

I turned to face her, keeping my expression neutral, though every muscle in my body was tight. “Ashley, did you really think you were the only one he was lying to?”

“What are you talking about?” she demanded, a flash of defensive pride breaking through her panic. “Dale loves me. We’re getting married as soon as the divorce—”

“He’s not getting divorced, Ashley,” I interrupted smoothly. “Not the way you think. And he certainly isn't marrying you. The condo on the north side? That’s tied up in commercial debt liens. The white Lexus? Registered under a corporate subsidiary that was frozen by a federal judge yesterday morning.”

Ashley stared at me, her mouth slightly open, processing the words as if they were written in a foreign language. “You’re... you’re lying. You’re just his hair stylist. How would you even know that?”

I reached up, unpinned the small gold-plated name tag from my apron that read Miss C, and tossed it onto the counter. Then I looked straight into her eyes.

“My name isn't Miss C. My name is Carol Scott. I’ve been Dale’s wife for twenty-six years.”

The silence that followed was absolute. The hum of the hair dryers near the back of the salon seemed to fade into a distant buzz. Ashley stepped back, her hands flying up to cover her mouth as the full, humiliating weight of the revelation crashed down upon her.

“You...” she breathed, her eyes darting across my face, searching for any sign of a joke or a cruel prank. “You’re the wife? The one he said didn't care about anything? The one who worked at the dental clinic?”

“That’s right,” I said softly. “And every Thursday for the past six months, you sat in this exact chair and told me every single detail of my own husband’s betrayal.”

Ashley’s face flushed a deep, burning crimson, tears spilling over her lower lashes—not just from grief, but from the crushing realization of how thoroughly she had been played. She spun around on her heel, bolted toward the front door, and rushed out onto Vineville Avenue without looking back.

I watched her go through the glass window, feeling no triumph—only a cold, sharp clarity. And then, as the front door clicked shut behind her, the bell chimed again.

This time, it was Dale.
