Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at Midnight

"Quiet," Dante murmured, his hand instantly moving to the small of Caroline’s back, guiding her behind the heavy mahogany desk before she could blink.

The front door clicked open.

"Julian? Is that you, you idiot, I told you to use the service entrance," a harsh, unfamiliar voice hissed from the hallway.

A second voice answered—trembling, breathless, and unmistakably Julian Vance. "I forgot my passport, Senator. I had to come back. The feds—Dante Baker’s men—they’re tearing my office apart downtown—"

Caroline peeked around the edge of the desk.

Through the gap in the office doorway, she saw Julian stumble into the living room, followed closely by a tall, silver-haired man wearing an immaculate charcoal overcoat and a red silk tie.

Senator Robert Callahan.

The golden boy of the Illinois state legislature, smiling out from campaign posters across every CTA bus stop in the city. In person, under the harsh light of the penthouse chandelier, he looked like a shark dressed in custom Brioni wool.

"You left the ledger, didn't you?" Callahan said, his voice dropping into an icy, threatening register. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to. The quiet menace in his tone made Julian flinch.

"No, Senator, I swear, it's locked in the—" Julian started, freezing as he turned toward the office door.

Dante Baker stepped out from the shadows of the doorway, his hands casually shoved into his trouser pockets.

Callahan didn't jump. But the color drained entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a marble bust.

"Baker," Callahan breathed, his eyes darting toward the empty hallway behind Dante. "You’re trespassing."

"And you're standing in my city, Senator," Dante said softly, closing the distance between them with slow, deliberate steps. "Sending thugs with bricks to break windows in a tailoring shop doesn't suit a man of your political ambitions."

Callahan forced a tight, brittle smile, trying to regain his composure. "I have no idea what you're talking about, Dante. This is a private residence. If you don't leave right now, I’ll have my security detail—"

"Your security detail is currently tied up in the alley three blocks down," Dante interrupted, his voice smooth as glass. "Along with your career."

Julian let out a panicked sob, dropping to his knees on the white carpet. "Don't kill me! I didn't mean to talk, Baker, I swear on my mother's grave—"

"Shut up, Julian," Callahan snapped, his aristocratic facade finally cracking under the pressure. He glared at Dante. "You think you can pin some phantom real estate conspiracy on me? I write the laws in Springfield. You’re a footnote in a police blotter."

"You write laws," a cool, steady voice echoed from the office doorway.

Callahan blinked, his gaze snapping past Dante as Caroline stepped out from the shadows. She was holding the black canvas ledger in her left hand, her fingers steady, her eyes locked dead on the state senator.

Julian stared at her in utter horror. "Caroline... honey... what are you doing here?"

"Don't you 'honey' me, Julian," Caroline said, her voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade. She walked right up to Callahan, stopping two feet away from the powerful politician. She held up the black ledger. "You and my father built an empire on stolen titles and grease money. But you missed one volume."

Callahan stared at the book in her hand, his breath catching in his throat. For the first time, genuine panic flickered in the senator's eyes.

"Give me that book," Callahan said, stepping forward with his hand outstretched.

Before Callahan's fingers could even brush the cover, Dante’s hand clamped around the senator’s wrist like a steel vice.

"I wouldn't touch her if I were you, Senator," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave into something truly terrifying. "She’s under my protection."
