Chapter 5 - The Line in the Sand

The silence in the hallway grew so absolute that you could hear the hum of the overhead fluorescent ballast.

Vance smiled, a tight, confident smirk of a man who had never lost a case against someone without corporate backing. He assumed I was still the girl who hid in her bedroom while Lenora threw away her belongings. He assumed a sharp suit and a fabricated threat about my service record would make me fold.

I didn't blink. I didn't step back.

Instead, I let out a short, cold breath that sounded almost like a laugh.

"Mr. Vance," I said, my voice dropping into the steady, measured cadence of a drill instructor addressing a subordinate. "Let me explain something about military justice that your corporate law books left out."

Vance’s smirk faltered for a microsecond.

"You can dig into my service record all you want," I continued, stepping closer until he was forced to tilt his head back slightly to maintain eye contact. "You’ll find rifle marksman badges, meritorious mast commendations, and a clean conduct medal. What you won't find is a single lie."

I reached out and tapped the slick fabric of his expensive lapel with one finger.

"My home was forcibly breached at 0200 hours. My government-issued door was smashed. Physical violence was inflicted upon an active-duty Marine in a secured military housing zone. That isn't a domestic squabble, Mr. Vance. That is a federal offense against the United States government."

Lenora let out a small, terrified whimper from behind her lawyer.

Vance’s jaw tightened, the corporate charm evaporating to reveal a hard, calculating glint in his eyes. "You're playing a very dangerous game, Corporal. You're cutting off your own blood over a bruised rib."

"My blood walked out on me a long time ago," I replied evenly.

Before Vance could retort, the heavy security doors at the end of the corridor hissed open, and two federal marshals stepped inside, flanked by Captain Miller holding an official dossier bearing the red stamp of the U.S. District Attorney.

"Richard Vance?" Captain Miller called out, his voice echoing off the concrete walls.

Vance turned, visibly annoyed. "Yes?"

"You're advising clients under federal indictment for felony trespassing and assault on a federal installation," Miller said coldly, handing him a thick packet of paperwork. "Furthermore, NCIS has just flagged your firm for attempting to tamper with military witnesses by threatening retaliatory service record leaks."

Vance’s face went completely bloodless. He whipped his head around to stare at Lenora, then back at Miller. "That’s entirely unfounded—"

"Save it for the magistrate," Miller interrupted, motioning to the marshals. "Take them back to holding. All three of them."

As the MPs stepped forward to re-cuff Brooke and lead a sobbing Lenora away, my father caught my eye one last time as he was escorted past. He didn't speak. He just looked down at the floor, defeated.

I watched them go, feeling the dull ache in my ribs settle into a quiet, enduring strength. They thought they could break me. But as the heavy steel doors locked behind them, I knew the real war was only just beginning.
