Chapter 9 - The Cipher

Frankie’s pistol clicked on an empty chamber.

Before he could drop a fresh magazine into the well, Vincent vaulted over the fallen desk, crossed the room in three long strides, and slammed the butt of his Glock against Frankie’s temple.

Frankie crumpled without a sound, sliding down the metal shelving and collapsing unconscious onto the dusty floor.

The vault went dead silent, save for our heavy breathing and the distant, muffled echoes of shouting from somewhere up in the main house.

Vincent exhaled slowly, lowering his weapon, and turned to look at me. He saw the ledger clutched tightly in my arms.

“You didn't go through the tunnel,” he said, a faint, humorless shadow of a smile touching his lips.

“I'm not a coward, Vincent,” I said, wiping a streak of dust and sweat from my forehead with the back of my hand. “And I'm tired of running from mistakes my father didn't even make.”

Vincent stepped closer, his hand gently reaching out to touch the worn leather cover of the ledger. His fingers brushed mine, lingering for a fraction of a second longer than necessary.

“Your father wasn't just an accountant,” Vincent repeated softly. “Look at the third column on page forty-two.”

I opened the book, flipping past the yellowed pages of financial transfers and dummy corporations until I reached the tab marked 1998. The columns were filled with numbers, but beneath them, written in tiny, intricate shorthand, were names I recognized from local headlines—including Silas Dyer.

“It’s not just a ledger,” I realized, my eyes scanning the cryptic symbols. “It’s a ledger written in a custom cipher. My father used a double-entry coding system based on nursing terminology.”

Vincent raised an eyebrow. “Nursing terminology?”

“My mother was an obstetrics nurse before she married him,” I explained, tracing a line of numbers with my trembling finger. “Look at the abbreviations. Gravida, para, dilation, delivery. He encoded the exact dates, amounts, and bank account numbers of every bribe Silas paid to the local judges and police chiefs to frame him.”

Vincent stared at the page, his expression shifting from grim determination to profound realization.

“That’s why Silas has been hunting for this book for nearly thirty years,” Vincent whispered. “It’s not just about money. It’s a complete roadmap of how the entire syndicate was built on stolen land and judicial corruption.”

Suddenly, the heavy metal door at the top of the sub-basement stairs rattled violently. A loud, metallic crash echoed through the stairwell as someone applied a hydraulic pry bar to the reinforced latch.

“They found the primary entrance,” Vincent said, his voice hardening instantly. He grabbed Frankie by the collar, dragging the unconscious man toward the dark maintenance tunnel. “Move, Bridget. Now.”
