Chapter 15 - The Breaking Point

"Case dismissed with prejudice," Judge Harrison declared, bringing the wooden gavel down with a resounding crack that shattered Eleanor Sterling’s world. "Furthermore, this court refers petitioner Eleanor Sterling and her counsel to the United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia for immediate review of potential bankruptcy fraud and frivolous litigation. Court is adjourned."

Bradley immediately gathered his briefcases, whispering frantically into Eleanor’s ear. Eleanor pulled away from him, her composure completely shattered. She stood up, her expensive coat falling open, her hands trembling with rage as she glared across the wooden bar at me.

"You think you’ve won, Claire?" Eleanor hissed, her voice trembling. "You put my daughter in a jail cell, you stripped my family of its name, and you turned my own son against me! You are a monster!"

"Your daughter locked my pregnant wife on a freezing stone balcony in fourteen-degree weather and left her there to die," David roared, stepping in front of me, his chest heaving. "You raised a sociopath, Mother. And you spent twenty-five years living on money stolen from dead soldiers' families. Do not ever speak to my wife again."

Eleanor took a step back, stunned by the absolute hatred in David's eyes. Without another word, she turned and fled through the heavy courtroom doors, her heels clicking rapidly against the marble floor.

Outside the courthouse, the cold air hit our faces, but it was no longer biting. It felt clean.

David wrapped his arm around my shoulder, holding me close. "I'm sorry, Claire. I'm so sorry it took all of this for me to see who they really were."

"It's over, David," I whispered, leaning against his shoulder. "The legal fight is over."

Suddenly, a sharp, stabbing cramp ripped across my lower abdomen.

I gasped, my knees buckling. David caught me instantly, his arms tightening around my waist as panic flashed across his features.

"Claire! What's wrong?"

"The baby..." I choked out, a cold sweat breaking out across my forehead as another intense spasm seized my stomach. "David... something's wrong."

Within seconds, Captain Ramirez was at my side, his military radio already barking orders to the base medical transport parked at the curb. "Medic! Code Red, maternal distress at the north portico! Bring the gurney now!"

As they lifted me into the back of the armored ambulance, the sirens began to wail, cutting through the Richmond traffic. Darkness encroached at the edges of my vision. I felt David gripping my hand with white-knuckled desperation, his voice trembling as he pleaded with the paramedics.
