Chapter 4 - The Trap Closes

The door to the consultation office clicked shut as Dr. Henderson nervously cleared his throat, sliding my file into the bottom drawer of his desk and replacing it with an identical cream-colored folder Abigail had prepared.

“She’s... she’s coming down the hall,” Dr. Henderson whispered, beads of sweat forming along his hairline. “What do you want me to do?”

“Act normal,” I said, stepping back into the shadows near the examining table just as the doorknob turned.

Abigail walked into the office, a bright, triumphant smile plastered across her face. She looked like a predator who had finally cornered its prey. Behind her, Mom was guided in by a clinic nurse, still maintaining her blank, wandering stare.

“Doctor Henderson!” Abigail said brightly, stepping up to the desk. “I see you have the files ready. We’re so anxious to get Martha settled into the care facility downtown. It’s just been so overwhelming for Samuel and me.”

Dr. Henderson looked up, his hands shaking slightly as he picked up a pen. He glanced briefly toward the corner where I stood half-hidden in the shadows, then back at Abigail.

“Yes, Mrs. Reynolds,” the doctor said, his voice measured and stiff. “I’ve reviewed the preliminary file... and the supplementary evidence provided by your husband.”

Abigail’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second. Her eyes darted toward me. “Supplementary evidence? What evidence? We didn't bring any extra files.”

“Oh, I think we did, Abigail,” I said, stepping out from the shadows and walking slowly toward the center of the room.

Abigail spun around, her face losing its color. “Samuel? What are you—why are you standing back there?”

“Because I wanted to get a good look at your face when Dr. Henderson reads the real report,” I replied smoothly.

Dr. Henderson cleared his throat and opened the folder. “According to the financial records and the physical examination logs filed under state statute twelve-B, there is no clinical evidence of dementia in Patient Martha Reynolds. However, there is extensive documentation of systematic financial extraction, unauthorized real estate transfers, and acute physical trauma consistent with restraint abuse.”

The room went dead silent.

Abigail staggered back a half-step, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror. “That’s—that’s a complete fabrication! That old woman is insane! Samuel, you know she’s insane! You heard her rambling this morning!”

Mom suddenly stopped staring at the wall. She straightened her posture, let out a sharp, crisp breath, and looked directly into Abigail’s eyes with absolute clarity.

“I’ve never felt sharper in my life, dear,” Mom said, her voice steady and razor-sharp.

Abigail whipped her head around, realizing in a single horrifying second that she had walked right into a calculated trap.
