Chapter 8 - The Corner Office

The probate judge’s chambers smelled of aged paper, old leather, and floor wax. Sunlight streamed through the high arched windows, casting long golden bars across a heavy mahogany conference table where copies of Margaret Sterling’s final, unaltered will lay open next to our certified bank audits.
Judge Thomas Henderson—a heavy-set man with kind eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses—pushed his reading glasses up onto his forehead and looked across the table at Luca, who sat alone now that Richard had been taken away for questioning.
"Mr. Sterling," Judge Henderson said, his voice deep and measured. "Your counsel has been temporarily suspended from practice pending a federal audit of the subsidiary accounts in question. That means you are currently unrepresented in this proceeding."
Luca looked smaller than he had in years. The bespoke suit still fit him, but he seemed to have collapsed inward, his shoulders slumped, his hands flat against the mahogany table.
"Your Honor," Luca began, his voice cracking slightly before he cleared his throat. "There's been a terrible misunderstanding. My wife—Mrs. Vance—was under a great deal of stress. The corporate holdings were established as mutual investments to protect our family's future. I never intended—"
"Mr. Sterling," Rachel interrupted smoothly, sliding a certified document across the table. "The court isn't reviewing your intentions. It's reviewing your signatures. Specifically, the forged power of attorney dated four years ago, and the unauthorized transfer of Maplewood Lane executed last month."
Luca glared at Rachel, a flash of his old arrogance breaking through the panic. "You don't know anything about our marriage! You weren't there when we built that firm from nothing! Jessi sat at home while I worked eighty-hour weeks! She didn't earn a single dollar of what's in that trust!"
"She earned every hour of it by keeping your life together while you embezzled from her aunt," Rachel snapped back before Judge Henderson raised a single finger to quiet the room.
The judge looked down at me. "Mrs. Vance? You have full legal standing to petition for immediate repossession of all subsidiary assets, including Sterling Tower and the Maplewood residential property, as well as an immediate restraining order preventing Mr. Sterling from accessing corporate accounts. How do you wish to proceed?"
The room went completely silent. Every eye was on me—Rachel, Judge Henderson, and Luca, who stared across the table with a desperate, pleading look that I hadn't seen since the day we met.
For twelve years, I had made excuses for him. I had told myself that his ambition was for our family, that his late nights were sacrifices for our future, that my own small contributions didn't matter because we were a team.
Now, looking at him across that heavy mahogany table, I realized the team had only ever existed in my own head.
"I don't want to ruin him, Your Honor," I said quietly, the words hanging heavy in the quiet room.
Luca’s eyes flickered with a sudden, fragile spark of hope.
"However," I continued, turning my gaze back to the judge, "I want full, unconditional custody of our children, immediate and permanent title to the Maplewood residence without encumbrance, and a complete corporate restructuring of Sterling-Vance Holdings returning all voting shares exclusively to the Margaret Sterling Estate."
Luca slammed his hand down on the table, the sound echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "Jessi, you can't do that! That's my entire career! That's everything I've built!"
"You didn't build it, Luca," I said, standing up from my chair and smoothing down my coat. "You rented it. And your lease just expired."

Judge Henderson banged his gavel once, the clean, sharp crack sealing the record. "Motion granted as stated. Court is adjourned."
