Chapter 8 - The Ultimatum

By 9:30 AM on Wednesday, the tension on the thirty-second floor of Vance & Sterling was palpable.

Claire sat at her desk, her fingers flying across her keyboard as she finalized the legitimate portions of the routine client portfolios. Her heart hammered against her ribs with every chime of the elevator, half-expecting David Vance to storm into her office and demand to know why she hadn't yet signed the preliminary Meridian Freight acquisition papers.

At 10:15 AM, the glass door to her office swung open.

It wasn't David. It was Elena Vance, the Chief Operating Officer of Carter Technologies, flanked by two corporate attorneys carrying heavy leather briefcases.

The entire open-plan office went dead silent. Junior analysts and associate consultants froze in their chairs, staring in disbelief as Elena marched past the reception desk and directly toward David Vance’s private corner office.

A moment later, David emerged, his expression a mask of practiced corporate charm, though a slight twitch near his left eye betrayed his sudden anxiety.

"Ms. Vance," David said smoothly, extending a hand. "To what do we owe the pleasure? I wasn't expecting Carter Technologies' executive team until our scheduled review tomorrow afternoon."

Elena did not take his hand. She looked at him with icy professional disdain.

"We aren't here for tomorrow's review, Mr. Vance," Elena said, her voice carrying clearly across the entire floor. "Carter Technologies is formally giving notice of our intent to terminate all pending advisory and auditing contracts with Vance & Sterling, effective immediately."

A collective gasp rippled through the office. David’s smile faltered, color draining from his face.

"Terminate?" David's voice spiked slightly before he caught himself, forcing a strained laugh. "Surely this is a misunderstanding, Ms. Vance. We have spent three months preparing—"

"You spent three months concealing systematic compliance failures and potential securities violations within your subsidiary network," Elena interrupted, opening her briefcase and sliding a thick manila folder across the reception counter. "Our legal team has reviewed your recent acquisition filings regarding Meridian Freight and associated holding entities. We are forwarding these findings to the state regulatory board within the hour."

David stared at the folder, the blood entirely draining from his face. He knew—instantly—that the internal subsidiary documents had been leaked. Only a handful of people had access to those files.

Slowly, deliberately, David turned his head away from Elena and looked across the open floor.

His eyes locked onto Claire Bennett sitting at her desk.

The silence in the office became deafening. Every head turned from David to Claire, watching the silent collision of realization. David's expression shifted from shock to a cold, venomous rage that made the air in the room feel unbreathable.

"You," David whispered, his voice trembling with suppressed fury as he started walking slowly toward her cubicle. "You little traitor."

Claire didn't flinch. She stood up from her desk, closing her laptop with a sharp snap, and met his gaze head-on.
