Chapter 3 - Premature Truths

The private wing of Mercy General Hospital smelled of antiseptic and cold steel. Outside Suite 402, two of Adrian’s armed security guards stood like stone statues, their dark suits blending into the sterile white walls. When I stepped out of the elevator behind Adrian, one of them instinctively moved to block my path before recognizing me and stepping back.

“Let her stay,” Adrian said flatly, his jaw clenched as he pushed the heavy double doors open.

Inside, the room was a blur of frantic medical staff and rhythmic monitor beeps. Sofia Russo lay propped up against the pillows, her face slick with sweat, her hands gripping the hospital sheets as a nurse barked instructions. When the door opened, Sofia’s dark eyes locked instantly onto Adrian—and then flickered over to me standing right behind him.

A ragged gasp escaped her lips through a grimace of pain. “Get... get her out of here,” Sofia managed to choke out between contractions. “This isn't... her place.”

“She stays,” Adrian said, his voice cutting through the clinical chaos with absolute authority. He didn't look at Sofia; his gaze was fixed on the lead obstetrician standing by the incubator equipment. “Is the baby stable?”

“We’re trying to stabilize them now, Mr. Moretti,” the doctor replied, not looking up from the charts. “Premature respiratory distress. We need to move her to the neonatal ICU immediately following delivery. It’s critical.”

I stood near the door, my arms crossed tightly over my chest, watching the scene unfold with a detached numbness. This was the reality of Adrian’s world crashing into mine—not abstract threats or corporate ledgers, but a premature infant fighting for breath in a hospital room paid for by mafia money.

Sofia let out another cry, her fingers digging into the mattress as a fresh wave of pain hit. In that moment, looking past the anger and the betrayal, I saw something else in her face: sheer, unadulterated terror. This wasn't just a cold-blooded chess piece executing a rival's plot. She was a terrified young woman whose emergency delivery had been triggered by something far more violent than natural causes.

I stepped closer to the bed, ignoring Adrian’s warning look.

“Sofia,” I said calmly, my voice cutting through her panicked breathing. “Look at me.”

She blinked, her eyes wide and bloodshot.

“Who pushed you down the stairs?” I asked.

The room seemed to freeze. The doctor paused mid-motion. Adrian whipped his head around, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits as he stared at Sofia.

Sofia’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. A single tear tracked down her pale temple, cutting through the sweat. She looked from me to Adrian, and then whispered three words that turned the foundation of everything we thought we knew upside down.

“It wasn't... a fall.”
