Chapter 5 - The Wedding Ring

The sound of rain tapping against the glass pane of the guest house felt deafening in the silence that followed Maya’s confession.

My breath caught in my throat, the sharp edges of my anger suddenly giving way to a cold, hollow disbelief.

"A wife," I repeated, the word tasting bitter and unreal on my tongue. "Not a mistress."

Maya nodded miserably, wiping her cheek with the back of her hand. "She met him two years ago through a municipal bidding project. When you started asking questions about the quarterly revenue drops last winter, Daniel panicked. He tried to buy her out, but she had already secured legal leverage over the firm's primary patents. The shell company, the real estate in Westchester, the consulting fees—it wasn't a slush fund for an affair, Claire. It was extortion. Daniel was paying her off to keep her from exposing the firm's financial irregularities to the federal regulators."

I looked down at the laptop screen. The green code had stopped scrolling. On the desktop, half-hidden behind an open folder, was a scanned document: a certified marriage certificate from Clark County, Nevada, dated eighteen months ago.

Daniel wasn't just a serial liar. He was a criminal trapped in a corner of his own making, and he had used our marriage, our company, and my trust as collateral to keep his house of cards from collapsing.

And Maya—my own sister—had helped him manage the paperwork.

"Why?" I asked, my voice barely audible above the hum of the computer. "Why help him, Maya? If you knew he was married to her, why lie to my face every single day?"

Maya looked up, her eyes wide and desperate. "Because if the firm goes under, Daniel goes to federal prison for wire fraud. And if Daniel goes down, he's taking our family's entire real estate portfolio—including the mortgage on Mom's assisted living facility—down with him. He used Mom's care facility as collateral for a commercial loan last year, Claire. If you expose him now, Mom gets evicted by the end of the month."

The room spun. Every piece of the puzzle shifted, locking into a terrifying, intricate design that made my carefully planned exit strategy look like a child's game. Daniel hadn't just underestimated me. He had weaponized my love for our family against me, knowing I would never do anything to risk my mother's safety.

Before I could process the full weight of the trap, my phone rang in my pocket.

It was an incoming video call from an unknown, encrypted number.

My fingers trembled slightly as I swiped the screen to answer. The display flickered, resolving into the crisp, high-definition image of a conference room I didn't recognize.

Sitting at the head of a long mahogany table was Brooke—not dressed in my cardigan or standing barefoot in my kitchen, but wearing a sharp, tailored gray suit, looking directly into the camera lens with a cold, triumphant smile.

And standing right beside her, his hands cuffed behind his back by two men in dark suits I had never seen before, was Daniel.
