Chapter 6 - The Weight of Paper

The manila envelope felt heavier than its contents justified. I sat in the leather booth of the Omni Parker House for a long time after Arthur Vance walked away, watching the reflection of my own face in the dark, wood-paneled wall opposite me. My hands were steady. That surprised me. For eleven years, I had believed that if the scaffolding of my life collapsed, I would simply fall apart, dissolving into the quiet, compliant background Graham had carefully constructed for me.

Instead, the cold, sharp clarity of anger felt like iron in my veins.

Chloe slid back into the booth beside me, her eyes darting toward the exit where Arthur’s silver-haired figure had vanished into the lobby.

"What did he give you?" she whispered, leaning in close.

I laid the thick envelope on the table and pulled back the flap. We didn't need to read every line of the certified bank audits and wire transfer ledgers to understand what we were looking at. The numbers were staggering—four separate transactions over eighteen months, funneled from firm operational accounts into Vantage Holdings, and from there into private wealth management funds registered in the Cayman Islands under a corporate alias.

"It's not just an affair," Chloe breathed, her legal mind instantly synthesizing the data. "If Arthur's auditors certified these records, Graham didn't just misappropriate partner funds. He committed corporate fraud on a scale that will strip him of his license, his equity, and every asset he's tried to shelter before the wedding."

"Arthur wants him destroyed," I said, looking down at the neat rows of figures. "Not because Graham betrayed our marriage. Arthur doesn't care about that. He wants him destroyed because Graham tried to outmaneuver the old man's control of the firm."

"And you're the weapon he chose to wield," Chloe said, her voice sharp with caution. "Mara, if you walk into the federal prosecutor's office on Monday morning with Arthur Vance's private audit, you become the face of this lawsuit. Graham’s defense attorneys will tear into you. They'll paint you as a bitter, unstable wife seeking revenge after being discarded."

I closed the envelope. The cardboard edge pressed firmly against my thumb.

"They can paint me however they want, Chloe," I said quietly. "As long as they're looking at the paint, they won't see what I'm actually holding."
