Chapter 8 - The Counter-Move

The air inside the South Philly warehouse was freezing before dawn. The massive roll-up security doors were locked tight, but inside the main office, the glow of multiple computer monitors illuminated the cluttered desk.

Mara sat in the center chair, her fingers flying across the laptop keyboard with the practiced speed of someone who had spent years balancing restaurant ledgers and auditing bills. Dante stood behind her, leaning over her shoulder to watch the data streams, while Thomas kept watch near the door, peering through the wired glass into the dark expanse of the facility.

"Almost done," Mara murmured, her eyes locked on the progress bar crawling across the screen. "Uploading the final batch of container registry matches to the secure federal portal now. Ninety-eight percent..."

"Keep your voice down," Thomas muttered, clutching a cup of cold coffee. "If security makes an unscheduled sweep—"

"Security is on our payroll," Dante interrupted calmly, though his eyes remained fixed on the door. "Or at least, they were. That's why we're routing everything through the encrypted tunnel. By the time my father realizes the files are moving, they'll already be sitting on a federal prosecutor's desk in Washington."

The progress bar hit one hundred percent. A small, clean dialogue box popped up on the screen: Transfer Complete. Receipt ID #784-992-FX.

Mara let out a long, shaky breath, leaning back in the chair and rubbing her tired eyes. "It's done. The feds have the entire ledger, the wire transfers, and the container logs."

Dante straightened up, a quiet intensity settling over his features. "Which means my father has about twenty minutes before his own internal servers start throwing security errors."

"What do we do now?" Thomas asked, looking between them. "Do we run?"

"No," Mara said, standing up from the chair. She picked up the physical yellowed ledger from the desk and tucked it securely beneath her arm. "Running means hiding forever. We stay right here and let Vincent make his move."

Dante looked at her, a faint, appreciative smile touching his lips. "You really want to play chess with my father, don't you, Mara?"

"I want my life back," Mara corrected sharply. "And I want to make sure my family's name isn't remembered as the vault for a criminal empire."

Before Dante could answer, the low, distant rumble of heavy vehicle engines echoed from outside the warehouse. Headlights cut sharp, brilliant beams across the corrugated metal exterior, sweeping past the windows before stopping abruptly at the main loading bay.

Thomas froze, his coffee cup slipping from his fingers and shattering on the concrete floor. "They're here."

Dante didn't panic. He walked calmly to the window, peering through the blinds. A black town car and two utility vans were idling outside, doors opening in unison.

"Not just anyone," Dante said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. "That's my father's personal detail."
