Chapter 6 - The River's Edge

The fluorescent hum of the loading dock seemed to drop an octave as Marco’s final words hung heavy and sharp in the freezing Chicago air.
Victor’s mouth worked silently, his face cycling from arrogant certainty to absolute, unadulterated panic. He looked from Marco’s towering, unyielding frame to the senior police officer, who was now staring down at his handheld radio screen with eyes wide as saucers.
"Mr. Bellandi," the officer stammered, his posture straightening instantly as the dispatch unit confirmed the property credentials. "We... we weren't informed of any jurisdictional overlap. This was treated as a standard civil recovery request."
"Your precinct will be hearing from my general counsel within the hour regarding the unauthorized harassment of my staff," Marco replied, his voice dropping into a register so chillingly calm that it commanded absolute submission. "Now get off my property before I forget my manners."
The two officers didn't hesitate. They turned sharply on their heels, practically tripping over each other as they hurried back toward their squad car parked outside the outer security gates.
Victor stood frozen for a second, his camel-hair coat fluttering in the drafty wind blowing off the river. He realized, with sudden terrifying clarity, that the helpless baker he had crushed three years ago now stood behind a wall of untouchable corporate power.
"This isn't over, Elena!" Victor snarled, pointing a trembling finger past Marco’s shoulder. "You can't hide behind a billionaire forever! He'll chew you up and spit you out just like—"
Before Victor could finish his threat, Marco's lead security guard stepped forward with the silent, terrifying efficiency of a professional predator. He grabbed Victor by the collar and the heavy fabric of his belt, lifting him effortlessly off his feet and marching him straight toward the open rolling gate.
"Let me go! You can't touch me!" Victor shrieked, his voice echoing off the concrete walls before being abruptly cut off as he was tossed out onto the wet pavement outside.
I stood paralyzed, my arms still wrapped tightly around Noah, my chest heaving as the adrenaline slowly ebbed away, leaving a hollow, trembling ache in my bones.
Marco turned around, his sharp expression softening the instant his eyes met mine. He took two long strides toward us, kneeling down until he was at eye level with Noah.
"You okay, buddy?" Marco asked, his voice losing its razor edge, replaced by a surprising, steady warmth.
Noah blinked his big gray eyes, looking up at the man who had just thrown a policeman and a blackmailer out of a hotel. He nodded slowly, then buried his face back into my neck.
"He's safe now," Marco whispered, looking up at me. "And so are you."
Before I could find the voice to answer, my phone buzzed violently in my coat pocket. I pulled it out with a trembling hand, expecting a text from a debt collector or an unknown number.
