Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Driveway

The sun dipped below the tree line, casting long, bruised streaks of purple and orange across the sky as the neighborhood settled into quiet evening routines. Upstairs, Grace was sleeping soundly in her crib, her breathing light and even, while Sarah sat downstairs compiling a grocery list at the kitchen island to keep herself occupied after the exhausting confrontation with my parents. I stood by the master bedroom window on the second floor, looking down through the blinds at the quiet street below, watching the taillights of passing sedans cut through the gathering dusk. That was when I noticed the dark sedan parked three houses down, its engine idling quietly, casting a faint exhaust plume in the chilly air. It was a late-model Lincoln, nondescript and ordinary, yet something about the angle of its windshield and the silhouette of the driver behind the wheel felt entirely out of place in our quiet, residential cul-de-sac. My heart gave a sharp, involuntary thud against my ribs as I remembered Daniel’s warnings from months before his accident—warnings about corporate espionage, aggressive hostile takeover bids, and the dangerous competitors who wanted the proprietary encryption algorithms his company had developed. Daniel had always kept his professional life compartmentalized, shielding me from the darker edges of the cybersecurity world, but in the months following his death, I had spent hours going through his encrypted home archives, uncovering strange financial transactions and anonymous threats that went far beyond normal business rivalries. I watched as the interior dome light of the sedan flickered on for a split second, illuminating a man’s profile leaning over a laptop screen before plunging back into darkness. My phone buzzed on the nightstand, making me jump, and I picked it up to find an unknown number flashing across the screen with a local area code. I hesitated for three seconds before sliding my thumb across the screen to answer, pressing the speakerphone button as I kept my eyes locked on the car down the street. A distorted, electronically masked voice murmured softly through the speaker, telling me that my father wasn't the only one looking for Daniel’s hidden digital assets, and that I should check the safety deposit box at the downtown branch before someone else cleared it out. The line went dead with a sharp click before I could ask a single question, leaving only the hum of the cellular connection hanging heavy in the silent bedroom. I stood frozen for a long moment, the blood rushing in my ears as the reality of my situation deepened far beyond a petty family inheritance dispute into something genuinely dangerous. Sarah called up from the bottom of the stairs, asking if I wanted tea, her voice a warm anchor of normalcy that pulled me back from the brink of panic. I took a deep, steadying breath, locked the smartphone screen, and realized that my father’s greed was only the outer shell of a much larger, more perilous puzzle that Daniel had left behind in the dark.
