Chapter 5 - The Weight of the Ring

The brownstone in Brooklyn Heights smelled of old cedar, fresh paint, and rain.

Lily stood in the center of the master bedroom on the second floor, surrounded by boxes that Marco had neatly stacked against the baseboards. Her clothes, her books, her grandmother's framed photograph—everything she owned had been transplanted here while she was sitting at her desk on Fifth Avenue.

It was an act of staggering arrogance. It was also an act of absolute protection.

She walked over to the tall sash window, pushing aside the heavy velvet curtains to look out at the wet cobblestone street below. A dark sedan—the same model Lorenzo's security detail used—was parked idling by the corner lamp, its headlights cutting through the drizzle. They weren't hiding anymore. Or perhaps they had never been hiding at all.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. A single text message from an unknown number:

Check the bottom drawer of the mahogany desk downstairs.

Lily didn't hesitate. She walked down the narrow wooden stairs, her bare feet making soft thuds against the steps, and entered the ground-floor study. A heavy mahogany desk sat under a brass reading lamp that was already switched on.

She pulled open the bottom drawer.

Inside sat a small, black velvet box. Nothing else.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she lifted the box out and placed it on the desktop. She popped the metal clasp. Inside, resting against white satin, was a heavy vintage gold signet ring engraved with a coiled viper—the same crest she had seen embossed on the sealing wax in Lorenzo's office.

Beside the ring was a handwritten note in Lorenzo’s sharp, slashing cursive:

You thought you were working for a boss, Lily. Now you know why I never let you leave at six.

May you like

Before she could process the words, the heavy front door of the brownstone clicked open. Heavy, measured footsteps echoed in the entryway—the exact sound she had learned to trace in her sleep, moving with absolute purpose across the hardwood floor.

Lily turned toward the study door as the shadow fell across the threshold, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
