Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail

The predawn streets of Brooklyn were slick with a cold drizzle that blurred the neon signs of bodegas and auto-body shops. Dante’s black sedan slipped through the borough with the quiet grace of a predator. Inside, the cabin was silent except for the low hum of the heater.

I stared out the window at the familiar brick facades, my stomach twisting into knots.

"You think the police report was forged," I said, breaking the silence.

"I know it was," Dante replied, keeping his eyes on the road. He tossed the manila folder onto my lap. "When Teresa brought you to the estate, she told me you were a young widow who needed protection because your husband owed bad debts. But she didn't tell me who Miguel really was."

My hands shook as I opened the folder. Inside were photocopies of old financial ledgers, property deeds, and a police homicide report stamped CLASSIFIED in red ink.

"Miguel wasn't just a baker," Dante continued, his voice tight. "Before he married you, he worked forensic accounting for my father's shipping operations. Three years ago, he discovered a massive discrepancy—millions of dollars siphoned out of Moretti accounts into an offshore shell company. He came to me to confess, scared out of his mind. He said someone was threatening you and Sophie if he didn't help them launder the money."

I stopped breathing. The papers in my hand fluttered slightly. "That's not true. Miguel was gentle. He loved his bakery."

"Miguel loved you, Clara. That's why he ran," Dante said, glancing at me with a rare flicker of raw emotion in his dark eyes. "On the night he supposedly died behind the bakery, my father's men were supposed to pull him out of the city and put him in safehouse transit. But the hit squad got there first. Or... they staged it so everyone thought he was dead, while the real money trail went dark."

"If he's alive," I whispered, the horror dawning on me, "why is he coming to our cottage? Why is he knocking on Sophie's window?"

"Because the shell company is still active," Dante said as the car pulled up to a dimly lit red-brick precinct building on Atlantic Avenue. "And whoever has been controlling Miguel for the past three years needs the final encryption key to unlock the accounts. A key that Miguel hid... inside the one place no one would ever think to look."

He turned off the engine and looked straight at me.

"Inside Sophie's old nursery rhyme book."

My heart stopped. I had packed that book into a cardboard box three years ago and placed it on the top shelf of the cottage closet.

"We need to get back to the estate," I said, panic spiking through my veins. "Dante, if they're looking for the book—"

Before I could finish the sentence, my cell phone buzzed in my coat pocket.

An unknown number.

With trembling fingers, I slid the screen to answer and pressed it to my ear.

"Mama?" Sophie's voice came through the speaker, small and terrified, but it wasn't Sophie speaking alone. A deep, raspy voice whispered right beside the receiver:

“Tell Moretti to turn the car around, Clara. Or the little girl loses her other parent.”
