Chapter 10 - The First Flight

The morning sun broke over O’Hare International Airport, casting a brilliant, golden sheen across the massive glass terminal windows. Outside, wide-bodied commercial jets taxied along the tarmac, their jet engines roaring softly against the crisp autumn air.

I pushed our rolling carry-on suitcase through Terminal 5, my hand resting gently on Sophie’s shoulder. She wore her favorite winter jacket and clutched a brand-new, unbroken set of colored pencils in her left hand, her eyes wide with wonder as she stared at the giant international departure board above us.

“Look, Mom!” Sophie gasped, pointing upward with her pencil case. “Flight JL 009 to Tokyo Narita. Boarding in forty minutes!”

“ Gate K12,” I said, checking our mobile boarding passes with a quiet sense of satisfaction. “Right this way, partner.”

It had been four days since the federal indictments were filed, four days since the corporate ethics board restructured its entire loyalty compliance framework, and four days since my father and Aaron were arraigned downtown. The legal fallout was still unfolding, and the road ahead for our extended family would be long, complicated, and filled with difficult legal realities. There were no fairy-tale endings where broken relationships magically healed overnight.

But for the first time in eleven years, the ledger was balanced.

My corporate account was fully secured, protected by biometric multi-factor authentication and pristine compliance oversight. The stolen miles had been legally reinstated, converted, and re-allocated—not toward a luxury tropical resort for relatives who felt entitled to my labor, but toward three confirmed round-trip award seats in premium economy for a mother and her daughter heading straight for Tokyo Tower.

As we approached Gate K12, the gate agent smiled warmly as she scanned our digital passes.

“Welcome aboard, Ms. Vance and guest. Enjoy your flight to Japan.”

We walked down the jet bridge, stepping past the threshold into the sleek, quiet cabin of the aircraft. I guided Sophie to her window seat, helping her stow her small backpack beneath the seat in front of her.

Sophie pressed her face eagerly against the cold glass pane, watching the ground crew prepare the aircraft for pushback.

“Mom?” she asked softly, not taking her eyes off the runway.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Do you think we’ll see real cherry blossoms when we land?”

I smiled, sitting down in the seat beside her and fastening my seatbelt as the cabin lights glowed softly overhead.

“We’ll find out together,” I said, reaching out to hold her hand.

The jet engines whined to life, and the aircraft began its slow, steady roll down the tarmac, lifting us up and away from the past toward a sky that was entirely our own.
