Chapter 6 - The Geneva Wire

The name of the Swiss entity glowing on Gabriel’s tablet didn't just complicate the audit; it shattered the foundational premise of my entire return to New York.

For three years, I had operated under the absolute assurance that the Bennett Family Office’s European operations were clean, supervised, and isolated from the predatory commercial maneuvers happening on this side of the Atlantic. My father had retired to his estate in the Cotswolds, leaving the structural oversight of the North American portfolio entirely in my hands. Yet here, embedded in a fraudulent luxury write-off scheme engineered by Julian Vance, was a Geneva routing number bearing the private cryptographic stamp of the Bennett estate.

“Who has secondary signing authority on that European trust?” I asked, my voice dangerously low.

Gabriel tapped the screen, bringing up the master access logs. The digital signature attached to the Geneva account didn't belong to a faceless corporate trustee or a distant board member. It belonged to Marcus Bennett—my cousin, and the man currently serving as the executive vice president of European acquisitions in London.

Julian, still standing near the display case with his arms crossed over his chest, let out a harsh, bitter laugh. He pushed himself off the glass and took two steps toward us, his eyes flashing with vindictive triumph.

“You thought you were the only one playing a long game, didn't you, Olivia?” Julian mocked, his voice dripping with venom. “You walked into our relationship acting like a quiet, understated compliance officer, all while your own family was bleeding the company dry from across the ocean. Marcus didn't just clear my development loans—he engineered them.”

I didn't flinch. I turned to Gabriel, ignoring Julian entirely. “Lock down the Geneva routing codes immediately. Coordinate with London legal to freeze every European asset tied to Marcus’s division before the European markets open tomorrow morning.”

“Done,” Gabriel said, his fingers flying across the tablet. “But Olivia... if Marcus is backing Julian’s network, this isn't just an internal store audit or a local embezzlement ring. Your cousin has been systematically siphoning capital to build a rival luxury syndicate in Europe using Bennett-owned assets.”

The puzzle pieces clicked into place with terrifying precision. The sudden inventory shortages in Paris, the inexplicable push to restructure our global retail leases, the resistance I had faced from the London board whenever I questioned our European expansion budgets—it wasn't incompetence. It was an organized, systematic corporate mutiny led by someone bearing my own last name.

Julian stepped closer, his expression shifting from mockery to a cold, desperate calculation. “You can’t destroy me without destroying Marcus, Olivia. And if you expose Marcus, you expose a family civil war that will wipe out the Bennett name on Wall Street and the London Stock Exchange. Let my leases stand, drop the embezzlement charges, and I’ll give you the complete digital ledger of every overseas transfer Marcus authorized.”

I looked at Julian—the man I had shared a home, a bed, and four years of my life with, who was now bartering his own criminal survival to protect a conspiracy he helped build.

“You still don't understand anything about me, Julian,” I said, stepping right up to him. “I didn't build my career on fear of what people might say. I built it on truth.”

I turned away from him, signaling the security team at the door. “Escort Mr. Vance off the premises. If he steps foot inside this building again, make sure the felony charges are filed before the ink dries on the police report.”

As two security guards stepped forward and grabbed Julian by the arms, his face twisted in absolute fury. He wrenched away from them for a fraction of a second, his voice echoing off the marble pillars: “You’ll regret this, Olivia! When Marcus finishes what he started, you won't even have a company left to audit!”
