Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail

Leo didn't ask me to explain over the phone. Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in the corner booth of a 24-hour diner three blocks from my high-rise, nursing a styrofoam cup of lukewarm black coffee while Leo thumbed through the digital audio files I had airdropped to his encrypted burner phone.
He listened with headphones on, his face carved out of granite. When the audio finished—the chilling clarity of Julian’s voice ordering Marcus not to leave any marks—Leo slowly pulled the earbuds out and stared across the Formica table at me.
"This isn't just a messy divorce, Sofia," Leo said quietly, glancing out the diner window toward the towering silhouette of my apartment building. "This is premeditated asset stripping combined with systemic drugging. If he’s using a controlled sedative to induce retrograde amnesia so you'll sign documents under duress, that’s federal wire fraud and felony assault."
"He told Vanessa the transfer needed to clear before Monday," I said, staring down at my scarred knuckles. "The primary beneficiary rider. If that goes through, he and the corporate board can vote me out of the holding company entirely. I'll legally own nothing—not the firm, not the real estate, not even our joint accounts."
"And the bruise?" Leo asked, his eyes dropping to the collar of my high-necked sweater.
"Marcus grabbed me too hard when he loaded me into the SUV," I replied bitterly. "Julian was furious because an investigator might catch it before the medical incompetence narrative is fully established."
"Medical incompetence?"
"For the past two months, Julian has been having me evaluated by a concierge physician he handpicked," I realized aloud, the pieces finally snapping together in my head like a complex puzzle. "Every time I complained about memory loss and chronic fatigue, Dr. Hayes prescribed a 'restorative supplement regimen.' I bet my signature is already on file at the clinic certifying that I suffer from early-onset cognitive decline."
Leo let out a low whistle, leaning back against the vinyl booth. "He’s building a paper trail to declare you medically unfit, seize power of attorney, and clean you out while making it look like a tragic health crisis."
"Which means calling the police right now might backfire," I said, my voice hardening. "Julian is well-connected in Dallas corporate circles. If he and Vanessa have already filed the preliminary incompetence affidavits with the county probate court, a standard domestic abuse call won't stop the financial transfer happening on Monday morning. We need proof that the corporate board is actively complicit."
Leo narrowed his eyes. "What are you thinking?"
"Julian keeps a physical safe in his private office at the firm," I said, a dangerous clarity taking over my mind. "Not the digital server in the cloud—a real, old-fashioned floor safe hidden behind the built-in bookshelves. That's where he keeps the original signed ledgers, the offshore account routing numbers, and the side agreements with Vanessa."
"That's corporate espionage, Sofia. Breaking into your own firm after hours is risky, but if you get caught—"

"I won't get caught," I interrupted, standing up from the booth and dropping a twenty-dollar bill on the table. "Because Julian thinks I'm asleep in our bed right now, drugged up and compliant, waiting for him to bring the paperwork back in the morning."
