Chapter 8 - The Price of a Name

The morning light broke gray and pale through the tall windows of the Moretti estate, bringing no warmth with it.

I hadn't slept. After Adrian left the suite in the early hours of the morning, I had spent hours pacing the Persian runner, turning his words over and over in my mind. He hadn't orchestrated the bet, but he had been waiting in the shadows for me to stumble into his trap. I was Clara’s daughter—a piece on a chessboard he had been setting up for years.

There was a soft knock at the door, followed by the entrance of Mrs. Gable carrying a heavy silver tray laden with coffee, fresh fruit, and a pristine white envelope stamped with the crest of Moretti Holdings.

"Good morning, Mrs. Moretti," Mrs. Gable said politely, though her eyes held a new, subtle shade of respect that hadn't been there yesterday. "Mr. Moretti has already left for downtown. He instructed me to ensure you received this before noon."

I took the envelope, breaking the wax seal with my thumb. Inside was a certified copy of the public marriage announcement slated for the evening edition of the city’s major financial newspaper, alongside a bank debit card issued in my new legal name: Mara Moretti.

And beneath that, a handwritten note in sharp, elegant ink:

Your brother’s surgery is scheduled for 10:00 AM at St. Jude’s. I will be there. You should be too.

Ten o'clock. It was already 8:30.

I didn't wait for a car to be brought around. I grabbed my coat, bypassed the main foyer, and used the encrypted satellite phone Adrian had given me to summon a driver from the private garage. Within twenty minutes, the sleek black sedan dropped me off at the private entrance of St. Jude’s Orthopedic Wing.

The sterile smell of antiseptic and polished linoleum hit me instantly.

I hurried down the quiet corridor of the VIP wing, my orthopedic work shoes—which I had stubbornly refused to throw away—clicking against the floor. As I reached Suite 402, I saw two of Adrian’s charcoal-suited enforcers standing guard by the door. They nodded respectfully as I approached, sliding the heavy wooden door open.

Inside, the room was filled with soft morning light. My brother Leo was propped up against a bank of pillows, looking pale but entirely free of the chronic pain that had pinched his face for months. A physical therapist was gently checking the range of motion in his right knee while a smiling nurse adjusted an IV drip.

"Mara!" Leo’s face lit up with a grin, though confusion clouded his eyes. "What are you doing here? They told me this room costs more than a year of my college tuition, and this guy in an expensive suit walked in an hour ago saying my entire medical debt is wiped out."

I walked over to the bed, my throat tightening as I reached out and squeezed his hand. It felt warm, real, and steady.

"It's true, Lee," I whispered, blinking back sudden tears. "You're getting the best care in the country. You're going to walk without a limp."

"Yeah, but how?" Leo asked, his brow furrowing as he looked past me toward the door. "Who is paying for this? And why did that guy outside—the one built like a brick wall—call you 'Mrs. Moretti'?"

Before I could answer, the door opened quietly, and Adrian stepped into the room.

He had changed into a charcoal three-piece suit, the dark tie impeccably knotted, his silver-streaked hair neat. He looked every bit the billionaire philanthropist and ruthless syndicate boss rolled into one.

Leo’s jaw dropped. "Wait... that's the guy from the bar. That's Adrian Moretti."

Adrian walked calmly to the side of the bed, nodding politely to the medical staff, who quietly excused themselves, leaving us alone in the quiet suite.

"It's an honor to meet you properly, Leo," Adrian said, his voice smooth and measured as he extended a hand. "I am Adrian Moretti. And as of this morning, your sister and I are married."

May you like

Leo stared at Adrian’s outstretched hand, then slowly shifted his gaze to me, his eyes wide with absolute disbelief. "You... you married the head of the Moretti syndicate? Mara, are you out of your mind?!"
