Chapter 4 - The Judge’s Ledger

The restaurant seemed to hold its collective breath. Judge Harrison looked down at Christopher with an expression not of anger, but of profound, clinical disappointment.

"I happened to be sitting across the room, Christopher," the Judge said, his baritone voice carrying a quiet weight that commanded absolute attention. "And I couldn't help overhearing your charming family discussion about forged signatures, defaulted notes, and fraudulent loans."

Christopher shrank back against the leather upholstery, looking as though he wished the floor would open up and swallow him. "Judge Harrison... sir... this is a private family matter—"

"It ceased to be a private family matter the moment you brought my daughter into your fraudulent social circle under false pretenses," the Judge interrupted smoothly. He turned his gaze toward me, his expression softening slightly into a look of genuine respect. "Kendall, is it?"

"Yes, sir," I answered, sitting up straight.

"Your mother spent six months trying to convince my wife and me that your family possessed old money, generational stability, and impeccable moral standing," the Judge said, shaking his head. "Last night, I discovered the truth: you built this entire facade with your own sweat and capital, while your mother and brother treated you like an indentured servant in your own home."

He reached into his overcoat and pulled out a thick legal document, placing it gently on the table between us.

"When I left your house last night, I had my firm run a preliminary title and asset search on your family's holdings," the Judge continued. "As it turns out, one of the commercial properties your brother claims to own free and clear is actually entangled with a development fund my firm represents. He’s been double-dipping on collateral. That’s a federal offense, Christopher."

Christopher let out a sharp, strangled sound, burying his face in his hands. "We were just trying to bridge the gap... the market crashed..."

"The market didn't crash your ethics; your greed did," the Judge replied coldly. He slid the document closer to me. "Kendall, this is an assignment of receivership. If you sign it, my firm will step in as the legal receiver for your family's remaining assets, wiping out your mother's personal liability, locking Christopher out of any further financial control, and transferring the primary title of the estate property directly into your name."

I looked down at the paper, stunned. "Why are you doing this, Judge Harrison?"

"Because integrity is a rare commodity in my line of work," the Judge said quietly. "And because people who build empires on the backs of those who love them deserve to see their foundations crumble."
