Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Penthouse

The Wilshire Grand penthouse occupied the very top of the tallest building west of the Mississippi, offering a panoramic view of the glittering Los Angeles skyline spread out like a circuit board of neon and glass.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass wall, wearing a sharp, tailored navy maternity blazer, my hands resting lightly over my swollen stomach. Behind me, sitting quietly in a high-backed leather armchair near the private wet bar, was Alexander Vance. He hadn't planned on staying for the confrontation, but when I insisted on handling Marcus alone, he had made one condition: I stay within earshot, and my security detail stays right outside the door.

At exactly 8:00 PM, the private elevator chimed.

The heavy mahogany double doors slid open, and Marcus stepped into the penthouse. He looked frantic. His tie was loosened, his hair was disheveled, and he was clutching a bulky leather briefcase to his chest like a shield.

"Elena?" Marcus called out, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings as he walked into the dimly lit living area. "What is this place? The front desk downstairs treated me like visiting royalty, and they wouldn't let me up until—"

He stopped dead in his tracks as I turned around from the window to face him.

"You look stressed, Marcus," I said calmly, walking slowly toward the center of the room.

Marcus blinked, his eyes darting around the massive, luxurious suite before landing on my face. "Elena... thank God. Look, I’m sorry about how I acted on FaceTime yesterday. I was panicked. The news... everything is spinning out of control. We need to catch a flight back to Seattle tonight, put out some statements, and—"

"Stop talking, Marcus," I interrupted, my voice cutting through the room like a scalpel.

He blinked again, taken aback by the absolute lack of warmth in my tone. "What? What are you talking about?"

"Let's talk about Miller & Associates," I said, stopping ten feet away from him.

Marcus’s entire demeanor shifted in a microsecond. The frantic, nervous husband vanished, replaced by a defensive, cold stranger. "What about my firm?"

"Your firm," I repeated, tilting my head. "The one funded by Sterling Real Estate's offshore shell companies. The one backed by a mezzanine loan carrying a forged signature."

The color completely drained from Marcus’s face. The leather briefcase slipped an inch down his grip, his knuckles turning white.

"I... I don't know what you're talking about," he stammered, his voice cracking slightly. "Where did you hear that word—Sterling? Elena, you're listening to gossip. The press is making things up—"

"Alexander Vance showed me the files, Marcus," I said clearly, watching every micro-expression on his face. "Every single document. The loan originations, the Cayman accounts, and the signature page where you signed my name without my consent."

Marcus stared at me, his chest heaving as he realized the game was entirely up. The mask of innocence shattered completely, replaced by a desperate, ugly panic.

"You don't understand!" Marcus shouted, taking a step forward and throwing his hands up in frustration. "Sterling approached me eighteen months ago! The commercial market was crashing, our biggest municipal client backed out, and the firm was going under! I was going to lose everything we worked for—our house, our savings, our entire life!"

"So you committed federal bank fraud and forged my name?" I shouted back, the fury I had bottled up for years finally breaking loose. "You risked our family, our future, and my name to save your own ego?"

"I did it for us!" Marcus yelled, his voice echoing off the glass walls. "If I didn't take that money, we would have been bankrupt! And besides, what was I supposed to do? Let Sterling ruin me? He was a monster! But now that he's arrested, now that Vance has frozen his assets..." Marcus paused, his eyes narrowing as a sudden, sickening realization dawned on him. "Wait. If Sterling's assets are frozen... and Vance controls the debt..."

Marcus slowly turned his head, finally noticing the silhouette of the man sitting quietly in the high-backed leather armchair near the wet bar.

Alexander Vance stood up, adjusting his suit jacket, and stepped out from the shadows into the warm penthouse lighting.

Marcus’s jaw dropped. "Vance... You're... you're here?"

"I own the building you're standing in, Marcus," Alexander said in a low, dangerous baritone, walking slowly toward us. "And as of this afternoon, Vance Global has formally acquired the entirety of Miller & Associates' delinquent debt portfolio from Sterling's receivership."

Marcus staggered backward, stumbling against the edge of a mahogany coffee table. "No... no, you can't do that. That’s a hostile takeover of a private architectural firm—"

"It's not a hostile takeover," Alexander said, stopping right beside me and placing a steady, protective hand on the small of my back. "It's a foreclosure."

Marcus stared at us—at Alexander, at me, at the cold, undeniable reality closing in around him. But instead of breaking down, a dark, venomous look twisted his features. He let out a harsh, bitter laugh.

"Oh, I get it," Marcus sneered, pointing a trembling finger between Alexander and me. "This was all planned, wasn't it? You two planned this on the damn plane! While I was back home busting my ass, my pregnant wife was cozying up to a multi-billionaire private equity titan!"

My hand lashed out before I even realized I was moving.

SLAP.

The sharp crack of my palm hitting Marcus’s cheek echoed through the massive penthouse.

Marcus stumbled sideways, clutching his red cheek, staring at me in absolute shock.

"Don't you ever project your own filth onto me," I whispered, my voice trembling with a rage so pure it burned. "You sold me out, you forged my name, and you put our unborn child at risk to feed your pathetic greed. We are done. And by morning, my divorce lawyers won't be the only ones coming for you."

Marcus glared at me, his eyes filled with venom and pure hatred. He straightened his jacket, grabbing his briefcase off the floor.

"You think you've won, Elena?" Marcus hissed, backing toward the private elevator. "You think a billionaire plays white knight out of the goodness of his heart? He owns you now, just like he owns my firm. You traded one master for another."

With a soft ding, the elevator doors slid open behind him. Marcus stepped inside, glaring at us one last time before the doors closed, swallowing him into the descent.

The penthouse fell completely silent.

I stood there, chest heaving, the adrenaline slowly ebbing away and leaving a hollow, exhausting ache in its wake. I closed my eyes, leaning slightly against Alexander's shoulder for support.

"Are you alright?" Alexander asked softly, his hand lingering on my back.

"I will be," I murmured, opening my eyes and looking out at the glittering lights of the city. "But Marcus was right about one thing. What happens now, Alexander? What does Vance Global actually want with me?"

Alexander didn't answer immediately. He walked over to the wet bar, poured two glasses of sparkling water, and handed one to me.

May you like

"Come with me to the private study," Alexander said quietly, his expression unreadable. "There's something I need to show you—something about your father's past with Vance Global that I haven't told you yet."
