Chapter 9 - The Hotel Room Redux

The sun had dipped below the Richmond skyline by the time I finally unlocked the front door of the estate. The house was dead quiet. Marcus had stayed behind at the federal annex to finalize the asset freeze paperwork, and Lauren had departed for Zurich to secure the final validation of the trust records.

I walked through the dark foyer, the silence pressing in against my ears. Every room felt different tonight—less like a shrine to a family legacy and more like a museum of carefully curated lies.

As I reached the foot of the mahogany staircase, I noticed a single envelope resting on the small silver entry table. It wasn't formal court stationery, nor was it stamped with corporate letterhead. It was plain white bond paper, folded once, with my name written in familiar, hurried handwriting.

Claire.

My heart gave a sharp, heavy thud against my ribs. I picked up the note and unfolded it in the dim light of the hallway lamp.

I know you won't want to see me. I know what it looked like through that hotel doorway, and I know what Lauren told you about the corporate ledger. But before you let the federal marshals lock me away for good, you need to know why I checked into Room 817 on our anniversary.

Meet me at the St. Claire Hotel lounge tonight at 9:00 PM. Room 817 is still open.

— Daniel.

I stared at the words, the anger I thought I had buried beneath layers of legal victories suddenly flaring back to life with blinding intensity. He wanted to meet at the exact hotel? In the exact room where this entire nightmare had begun?

My first instinct was to call Marcus, to hand the note over to the federal marshals and have Daniel arrested for violating his restraining order. But as I looked at the date on the note, a chilling detail caught my attention.

The note wasn't dropped off by a messenger today. The ink was slightly faded, and the paper was cold to the touch—it had been sitting inside my coat pocket since yesterday afternoon when I pulled it out of the gift bag I dropped on the hotel floor.

Daniel hadn't slipped it onto the entry table tonight. It had been buried inside the anniversary gift bag I brought to the hotel, hidden beneath the smashed red velvet cake all along.

I looked at my watch. 8:45 PM.

The St. Claire Hotel was only fifteen minutes away.

If Daniel had been trying to warn me about something else—something even Lauren hadn't disclosed in her neat, professional ledgers—waiting until tomorrow morning might mean losing the one piece of the puzzle that didn't fit into anyone else's narrative.

Without a second thought, I grabbed my keys, stepped back out into the cool autumn night, and drove toward the lights of the downtown hotel district.
