Chapter 7 - The Weight of the Ledger

The door latch clicked into place, sealing Sabrina out, but her words lingered in the foyer like a toxic gas.

Clara remained slumped against the marble wall, her knees pulled up to her chest, looking smaller and more fragile than I had ever seen her. The fierce, unyielding mother who had stood guard over our infant son in the ICU was gone, replaced by the ghost of a girl who had spent her life nursing a vendetta that had ultimately backfired and poisoned her own home.

"Is it true?" I asked, my voice dangerously steady as I stared down at her. "The medical bills? The stress markers? Did you and Sabrina... did you put our son at risk just to punish me?"

Clara flinched as if I had struck her. She raised her head, her eyes blazing through her tears with sudden, desperate defiance.

"No! Never!" she cried out, scrambling to her feet with a sudden burst of energy. She grabbed my lapels, her fingers bunching the fabric of my shirt as she shook me. "How could you even think that? Noah is my son, Ethan! I carried him, I fed him, I sat by his incubator while he fought for every breath! I didn't know Sabrina was going to pull that stunt with your phone when his fever spiked. I thought she was just going to expose the financial transfers, or confront you at the hotel to scare some sense into you!"

"She answered my phone, Clara!" I shouted, the dam of my own suppressed rage finally breaking. "She laughed at you while our baby was having a seizure! And you brought her into our lives! You gave her the keys!"

"Because I was drowning!" Clara screamed back, her voice cracking with a lifetime of inherited trauma and postpartum despair. "You were never home! Every time I looked at you, I saw your father’s face, I felt the ghost of my grandfather’s ruined life, and I felt completely alone in this oversized cage you bought with stolen money! I wanted an ally, not an executioner!"

The raw honesty of her words hit me harder than any punch. We stood there breathing heavily in the echoing hallway, the wreckage of our marriage piled up around our feet like shattered glass.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out, expecting another taunting text from Sabrina. Instead, it was an incoming call from Mount Sinai Hospital.

My blood ran cold.

"Hello?" I answered instantly, pressing the phone to my ear.

"Mr. Vance?" It was Dr. Alpert’s voice, brisk and urgent. "You need to get back to the hospital immediately."

"Has Noah taken a turn for the worse?" I gasped, my heart stopping. "Is he—"

"He's stable, but Mrs. Vance—the secondary emergency contact listed on his intake chart—just arrived and attempted to authorize a transfer of his medical file and guardianship documents to an out-of-state facility," the doctor said quickly. "Hospital security detained her, but she claims she has legal power of attorney signed by Clara."

Clara’s face went completely bloodless. "Power of attorney? I never signed anything like that."

"She did," I whispered, the sickening realization dawning on me. "The papers you signed last month when we opened the joint family trust... Sabrina had you sign a multi-tier proxy agreement buried in the fine print."

Clara stared at me, horror dawning in her eyes. "She’s not just trying to ruin us, Ethan. She’s trying to take my baby."
