Chapter 10 - The Unseen Heir

The gray clouds over the harbor began to clear, letting a thin, pale beam of afternoon sunlight cut across the water as Marcus’s words settled over us like falling ash.
"Eleanor didn't just walk away thirty years ago when your grandfather divided the initial estate," Marcus explained, leaning against the cold metal railing of the pier. "Barrett and Arthur orchestrated a freeze-out, convincing your grandfather that Eleanor was reckless with money, forcing her out with a fraction of her actual equity. She spent the last three decades building a war chest specifically to dismantle everything Barrett built."
I closed the folder, the weight of the new revelation settling heavily into my chest. "She watched Rhett burn through millions. She watched Barrett leverage the house. She even knew about the defense contracts."
"She didn't just watch them, Cormick—she fed them the rope," Marcus corrected. "The emergency funding rounds Rhett secured over the last year? Those weren't from traditional venture capital. They were funneled through Eleanor’s offshore network, designed specifically to push the logistics company past the breaking point so Barrett would have no choice but to mortgage his personal assets."
The entire architecture of the last seven years shifted in my mind. I hadn't just outmaneuvered my father and my brother at dinner; I had walked right into a trap that had been set a generation before I even wrote my first line of code. Barrett and Rhett were merely incompetent actors playing out a script written by an entirely different hand.
"If Eleanor holds the underlying debt derivatives that Apex Capital sold off..." I started, looking up at Marcus.
"Then she doesn't just own the remnants of your father's empire," Marcus finished grimly. "She legally holds the priority lien on Sterling Innovations LLC. Which means right now, under the letter of your grandfather's original trust, she has a legitimate claim to every piece of technology you've built since the day you walked out of this family's office."
My phone buzzed in my hand. I pulled it out expecting another alert from Silas, but the screen displayed a direct incoming video call from an unrecognized international number with a London area code.
I pressed accept.

The screen flickered, resolving into the crisp image of an elegantly dressed older woman sitting in a high-backed leather chair in a penthouse office overlooking the River Thames. Her striking blue eyes—the exact same shape as Barrett's—stared straight through the camera lens with an icy, terrifying intelligence.
"Hello, Cormick," Eleanor said, a thin, knowing smile touching her lips. "I hear you've been very busy cleaning up your father's mess. But I think it's time we discussed who actually owns the keys to the kingdom."
