Chapter 8 - The Accountant’s Son

The silence in Room 412 grew so dense that the low hum of the medical monitors sounded like a distant engine.

"An accountant's son," Luca repeated, running a hand over his short-cropped hair as the decades-old family history rewrote itself in his mind. "Vince didn't just hire a random surgeon off the street. He partnered with the son of the man your father ruined thirty years ago."

"It was never just a corporate coup," Gabriel said, his thumb softly tracing the knuckles of his sleeping mother. "It was a thirty-year grudge match. Vince thought he was running the syndicate, but Vale was using him to get inside our vaults, poison me, and strip the family legacy down to the studs."

I stepped closer to the nightstand, picking up the leather-bound family photo album the aide had dropped. I flipped open the heavy cover. Inside was a collection of faded polaroids from the late eighties—men in wide-lapel suits standing outside a lakeside social club. My eyes caught on a younger Arthur Vale standing beside a much younger Gabriel Moretti Sr., their arms thrown around each other's shoulders like brothers.

"Look at the signatures on the back of these photos," I said, sliding one out of its plastic sleeve.

Gabriel turned away from his mother's bed and looked over my shoulder. Written in neat, looping cursive across the faded cardboard was a note in Arthur Vale’s handwriting: Shared holdings, shared future. Fifty-fifty, till the end of the line.

"My father didn't ruin Arthur," Gabriel whispered, a harsh, bitter note entering his voice. "Arthur tried to empty the primary pension fund while the federal indictments were dropping in ninety-eight. My father gave him forty-eight hours to clear out of the state before the enforcers caught up with him. Arthur ran to Europe, and his family spent twenty years blaming us for their fall from grace."

"And now Julian Vale has come back to collect with interest," I said, meeting Gabriel’s dark eyes. "Which means the board meeting this morning isn't just about Vincent taking over your assets. It’s about Julian liquidating everything and transferring the entire syndicate fortune into overseas accounts that the Moretti family will never be able to touch."

Luca stepped toward the door, his face hard as iron. "If the board meeting starts at nine o'clock at the downtown corporate tower, we have exactly two hours to get down there before Vince signs the final transfer papers."

Gabriel gently laid his mother’s hand back onto the quilt, pulling the blanket up to her chin. He turned around, his posture straightening as the last remnants of the fever seemed to burn away under the heat of pure, focused vengeance.

"We aren't going to the corporate tower," Gabriel said, walking toward the door with a measured, lethal stride.

Luca stopped, frowning. "Then where are we going?"

"To Julian Vale’s private clinic," Gabriel replied coldly. "That’s where the master ledger is kept. That’s where the offshore routing keys are stored. And that’s where my cousin is currently waiting to celebrate our family's funeral."
