Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

The silence in the private office grew so thick I could hear the faint ticking of a grandfather clock in the hallway outside.

Arthur Vance stood tall, radiating the absolute arrogance of a man who believed the law was nothing more than a tool for the highest bidder. He didn't know that while he was threatening me, my phone was quietly synchronizing every single file in the Apex Holdings directory directly to a secure, encrypted cloud server managed by my corporate legal team in Columbus.

"An accident on an icy road," I repeated, my voice terrifyingly calm. "That’s a classic, Arthur. Very original."

"It's reality," Vance replied, checking his gold wristwatch with feigned boredom. "You have twelve hours, Shawn. Think very carefully about your parents' future."

I smiled. It wasn't a warm smile. It was the same cold, tactical expression I used when closing out a hostile competitor on the trading floor.

"You're right about one thing, Arthur," I said, sliding my phone off the desk and slipping it into my coat pocket. "I haven't lived in Pinewood Ridge for twelve years. I don't rely on the local sheriff, and I don't play golf with your district attorney."

Vance frowned slightly, a sudden edge of unease creeping back into his eyes. "What are you talking about?"

"I built a national logistics empire that moves millions of tons of freight across twenty-four states," I said, walking slowly around the edge of the desk until I stood right beside him. "Do you honestly think a corrupt municipal lawyer in a dying Pennsylvania valley is my biggest adversary?"

Before Vance could formulate a response, the heavy oak front door of the law firm downstairs slammed open.

Heavy footsteps echoed up the carpeted hallway—not the slow, shuffling steps of local deputies, but the synchronized, heavy boots of federal agents.
