Chapter 10 - The Price of a Dynasty

The stark white walls of the federal holding room smelled of floor wax and stale coffee.

Outside the reinforced glass window, the gray Chicago sky hung low over the river, casting long shadows across the financial district where Bellano Tower stood like a silent monolith.

I sat at the metal table, the legal documents spread out before me. The gold bracelet my mother had given me felt heavy against my wrist. Beside me sat Marcus, who had quietly stepped into the role of corporate trustee, and Elena, who had spent the last two hours reviewing the liquidation summaries with a quiet, professional dignity.

The door clicked open, and Dominic walked in.

He wasn't wearing his tailored suit anymore. He wore a simple dark grey button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his wrists free of cuffs for now, though his federal arraignment was scheduled for noon. He looked older, leaner, but the fierce, unyielding pride in his dark eyes hadn't faded by a single fraction.

He walked straight to the table, sat down across from me, and ignored the lawyers standing by the corner.

"The U.S. Attorney accepted the plea agreement," Dominic said quietly, his gaze fixed entirely on me. "Full confession to corporate racketeering and asset concealment in exchange for dropping all conspiracy charges against the subsidiary employees and corporate staff. Marcus keeps the legitimate shipping lines running under federal oversight. And the penthouse... the penthouse is signed over to you and the baby."

My throat tightened so hard I could barely speak. "You're taking all of it on yourself. Every single year of the sentence."

"It's my name on the ledgers, Penny," Dominic said simply. He reached across the cold metal table, sliding his hand over mine. His fingers were warm, steady, and calloused. "I built this syndicate on blood and paper. I'm the one who has to pay the debt."

"And us?" I asked, a tear finally spilling over my eyelashes and tracking down my cheek. "What are we supposed to do while you're inside?"

Dominic stood up, walked around the table, and pulled me up from the metal chair, gathering me into his arms right there in front of the lawyers and federal agents. He buried his face in my hair, his voice breaking for the first time with a raw, agonizing ache.

"You're going to live, Penny," he whispered fiercely against my ear. "You're going to raise our child in a home where there are no guards at the door, no rival syndicates in the dark, and no secrets left to hide. You're going to take that bakery in Iowa if you want it, or you're going to run Bellano Logistics legally under your own name."

He pulled back, his thumb gently wiping away my tear, his dark eyes searching my face with a desperate, burning intensity.

"I bought us five years, Penelope. Five years before I'm out, with a clean name, a legitimate foundation, and no enemies left in this city to threaten you." He leaned down, pressing his lips gently, lingeringly against mine. "Wait for me?"

May you like

I looked up into the eyes of the man who had terrified me, protected me, and ultimately broken down every wall I had ever built. I placed my hand gently over my stomach, feeling the faint, reassuring flutter of our child within.

"I'll be right here on the forty-third floor," I whispered, a faint, resolute smile touching my lips. "Running your empire until you get back."
