Chapter 6 - The Men Outside

The blue light of the laptop screen cast sharp, cold shadows across the dark hotel suite. On the small display, the live security feed showed two figures standing motionless in the corridor outside our door, their hands tucked inside heavy wool coats.
I looked down at the phone in my hand. Christian Vance’s smug, cold smile still lingered on the frozen video frame, an arrogant promise of ruin if I didn't comply by eight o'clock tomorrow morning. Behind me, the soft, rhythmic breathing of Emily sleeping in the next room reminded me exactly what was at stake.
I didn't panic. The blinding terror that had seized me when Julian first warned me about the syndicates had burned away, replaced by a cold, hard clarity. They thought they had cornered a helpless mother who would trade her daughter’s future for a quiet life. They didn't know who they were dealing with.
I tapped the screen, ending the encrypted call, and immediately dialed a number I had memorized seven years ago.
It rang twice before a deep, calm voice answered. "Vance."
"Julian," I said, keeping my voice low and steady. "They've made their move. Christian Vance contacted me directly via video link ten minutes ago. He gave me an ultimatum: sign away the trust by eight o'clock tomorrow morning, or else."
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line. When Julian spoke again, his voice was laced with a dark, dangerous edge. "So Christian finally stepped out from behind the curtain. He thinks he holds all the cards because Vincent ran up debts he couldn't pay."
"He has men outside my door right now," I said, glancing toward the hallway. "Two of them. Standing guard to make sure I don't run."
"They aren't there to stop you from running, Claire. They're there to intimidate you," Julian replied crisply. "Christian is a risk manager for a New York syndicate, not a street thug. He prefers clean paperwork and terrified people. If he wanted you dead or disappeared, he wouldn't have given you a deadline until morning. He wants the trust documents signed legally so his syndicate can launder their syndicate money through Moretti Logistics without raising federal red flags."
I walked over to the window, parting the heavy velvet drapes just enough to look down at the street below. A sleek black sedan was idling by the curb. "If I sign, Emily loses everything her grandfather intended for her. If I don't sign, they'll tear our lives apart."
"Then don't sign," Julian said firmly. "And don't stay in that hotel room for another ten minutes. Pack a bag. I'm sending a car. We are going to take the fight directly to Christian's ledger."
"What are you talking about?"
"Christian thinks he's the only one who kept records of the syndicate's transactions through Moretti Holdings," Julian said, a grim chuckle escaping his lips. "He forgot who trained him. The late Don kept copies of every single shadow agreement in a secure safety deposit box at a private vault downtown—access to which was legally transferred to the firstborn legitimate heir under the exact same trust document you slammed on the podium yesterday. Emily holds the key. And you are her executor."
I stared at the phone, a sudden, powerful wave of realization washing over me. The game wasn't about cowering under their threats. The game was about holding the match that burned their entire criminal enterprise to the ground.

"Send the car, Julian," I said, turning away from the window. "We're going to pay Christian a midnight visit."
