Chapter 10 - The Unseen Horizon

The evening shadows lengthened across the estate as the city lights began to twinkle against the Chicago skyline. Inside the grand living room, a roaring fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting a warm, golden glow across the Persian rugs.
Lily and Owen were fast asleep on the oversized velvet sofa, exhausted from a full day of running across the lawn, wrapped tightly in matching fleece blankets. I sat in a high-backed leather armchair nearby, watching the steady rise and fall of their chests. The fragile, hunted look they had worn at O’Hare Airport was completely gone, replaced by the peaceful abandon of children who finally knew they were home.
The heavy oak doors to the study opened softly, and Marco stepped into the room, holding a single encrypted tablet.
"We ran the municipal water rights acquisition project records Julian's journal mentioned," Marco said, keeping his voice low so as not to wake the twins. "It wasn't just a local transit deal, Ryker. The water rights tied into the entire North Shore commercial development grid—a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure project backed by a shadowy holding conglomerate out of New York called Meridian Trust."
I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees. "Meridian Trust. I've heard that name whispered in boardrooms, but they always operate through proxy shell companies."
"And the principal beneficiary of Meridian Trust?" Marco continued, sliding the tablet onto the coffee table in front of me. "A woman named Eleanor Vance."
I stared at the screen. The name hit me like a physical shockwave.
"Eleanor Vance," I repeated slowly. "Julian’s estranged mother. The matriarch who supposedly disowned him ten years ago for marrying outside her social circle."
"Not disowned," Marco corrected, tapping the screen to bring up a digitized family tree and financial ledger. "She set up the initial capital for Vanguard Holdings a decade ago, then pretended to cut ties so she could quietly use Julian's engineering genius as a front for her real estate acquisitions. When Julian discovered she was laundering acquisition funds through municipal water contracts and threatened to expose the entire operation, Diane was hired through an agency to infiltrate the household, monitor his movements, and set up his medical elimination."
The entire puzzle finally clicked into place with horrifying clarity.
It wasn't a greedy stepmother acting alone, and it wasn't just a corrupt corporate lawyer overstepping his bounds. It was a cold, calculating family matriarch who had orchestrated her own son's destruction because his integrity got in the way of her empire. And she had viewed her own five-year-old grandchildren as mere collateral damage to be discarded at an airport terminal when they became inconvenient.
I looked back down at the sleeping twins, feeling a cold, unbreakable resolve settle deep into my bones. Eleanor Vance thought she was untouchable behind her New York penthouses, her political connections, and her billion-dollar trust funds.
She didn't know that the man watching over her grandchildren owned half of Chicago—and had just decided to hunt her down.
Marco watched me quietly for a moment, sensing the shift in the room. "What are your orders?"
May you like
I stood up from the armchair, buttoned my jacket, and looked out the massive glass windows toward the dark waters of Lake Michigan.
"Book a private jet to New York for tomorrow morning," I said, my voice cold and absolute. "It’s time we introduced grandmother to her new family."
