Chapter 8 - The Counter-Strategy

Marcus opened his eyes, staring at me with a mixture of fear and lingering disbelief. “How? Robert has the legal debt notes. If he files those default assignments at the nine o'clock board meeting, the holding company dissolves automatically. Even if I confess to everything, the corporate paperwork stands.”

“The paperwork only stands if the debt is legitimate,” I replied, pulling a second document from my briefcase. “Look closely at the assignment signatures, Marcus. Look at who notarized the transfer of those debt notes three weeks ago.”

Marcus squinted down at the page. His brow furrowed. “It’s... it’s Richard’s firm stamp. But Richard was arrested yesterday.”

“Richard’s firm stamp, yes. But executed using a digital notary key that was deactivated six months ago when Richard updated his compliance software,” I explained calmly. “Robert was so eager to seize the assets before the police completed their audit that he used an outdated legal template. The moment I present this discrepancy to the board’s compliance officer this morning, every single debt assignment Robert holds becomes invalid corporate fraud.”

Marcus let out a ragged breath, leaning his head back against the pillow. “He’ll destroy you in the press. He’ll leak everything about our marriage, about the police investigation, about the hospital stay.”

“Let him try,” I said, closing the briefcase with a sharp click. “A corporate scandal makes headlines for a week. A hostile corporate takeover of a self-made woman's empire makes federal investigators look very, very closely at where Robert’s initial capital came from six years ago—starting with the collapse of my father's firm in Cincinnati.”

Marcus went completely still. He looked at me, really looked at me, as if seeing the woman he had tried to murder for the first time. “You’re going to destroy him completely.”

“I’m going to finish what he started,” I corrected, standing up from the chair. “And you are going to ensure he doesn't have a safe harbor left to run to.”

“What do you mean?” Marcus asked, his voice trembling.

“When Robert calls you this morning to confirm that the board meeting is underway, you are going to answer,” I instructed, walking toward the door. “You are going to tell him that I’ve already left for the hotel with the police audit logs. And you are going to ask him to meet you at his private office downtown to secure your 'exit strategy'.”

Marcus swallowed hard. “And if he doesn't come?”

May you like

“He will,” I said, pausing at the door and looking back over my shoulder. “Greed always outweighs caution, Marcus. Just ask yourself.”
