Chapter 8 - The Unraveling Partnership

The audit committee didn't just close the ticket; they buried it before lunch. By noon, David Vance had quietly packed his personal belongings into a cardboard box and left the building through the loading dock, his career sacrificed on the altar of his own cowardly compliance with Marcus’s fraudulent schemes.
I spent the afternoon working at my desk with the door closed, ignoring three separate calls from an unknown number. My professional standing was secure, and my bank accounts were locked down tight. But as I stared at the financial spreadsheets on my monitor, I knew that defensive maneuvers wouldn't stop the bleeding. Adrian and Marcus were cornered, desperate, and completely out of options—which made them more dangerous than ever.
At 6:00 PM, I received a text message that finally made me pause. It wasn't from Adrian. It was from Chloe, the mistress.
“Please, Maria. Can we meet? Just twenty minutes at the coffee shop on 4th Street. You need to know what they’re planning to do next.”
For a long moment, I stared at the screen. Every instinct told me it was a trap, a manipulation orchestrated by Marcus to draw me out into the open. But beneath the suspicion, a deeper curiosity stirred. Chloe wasn't a mastermind; she was a pawn who had realized too late that she was playing a game with people who would sacrifice her just as easily as they had sacrificed me.
Thirty minutes later, I pushed open the glass door of the quiet 4th Street café.
Chloe was sitting in a corner booth near the back, wearing an oversized trench coat that hid her pregnancy. She looked exhausted, her face devoid of the expensive makeup and arrogant posture she had worn in my living room weeks ago. When she saw me approach, she flinched, clutching her paper cup of tea as if it were a lifeline.
“Sit down, Maria,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Please.”
I slid into the booth across from her, keeping my coat on and my arms crossed over my chest. “You have five minutes, Chloe. Make them count.”
“I didn't know,” she blurted out, tears welling in her eyes. “When I met Adrian, he told me you were already separated, that the divorce was just paperwork. He said he loved me, that we were going to build a real family in that house.”
“And then you found out the house belonged to my mother, and that you were just a legal weapon used to execute a fraudulent real estate takeover,” I replied coldly.
Chloe winced, hanging her head. “Marcus planned the whole thing. He’s drowning in millions of dollars of construction debt, and the creditors are threatening to seize his personal assets. Adrian was terrified of losing his lifestyle, so he agreed to whatever Marcus wanted. But today… today I heard them talking in the kitchen.”
My posture stiffened. “What were they talking about?”
“They’re not giving up on the house, Maria,” Chloe said, looking up, her eyes wide with genuine terror. “Marcus found a loophole in the original developer’s purchase contract—something about a zoning technicality from three years ago. They’re filing an emergency injunction in civil court tomorrow morning claiming the sale was executed under duress while Adrian was mentally incapacitated. And if that doesn't work…”
She stopped, her breath catching in her throat.
“If that doesn't work, what?” I demanded.

“Marcus has a contact at the municipal tax assessor’s office,” Chloe whispered, leaning across the table. “They’re planning to forge a backdated lien on the property claiming your mother’s trust funds were derived from undeclared commercial income, which would freeze the entire transaction and drag your mother into a federal tax audit.”
