Chapter 8 - The Weight of Leverage

The silence that followed stretched so thin it felt like glass about to shatter. Thomas stared at me, his mouth slightly open, the carefully constructed armor of corporate dominance completely stripped away. The man who had acted as though his family was an elite dynasty sustained by his brilliance suddenly looked like a man standing on the edge of a cliff with his toes hanging over the void.

"You wouldn't do that," Thomas whispered, his voice losing its sharp edge, replaced by a desperate, hollow disbelief. "Mom... mom depends on that place. You helped pick out her room."

"I did," I agreed, my voice steady, though my heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs. "And I paid for her physical therapy sessions out of my own pocket while you complained that our grocery bill was too high. Don't talk to me about family loyalty, Thomas. You threw our child's ultrasound in the trash. You plotted my eviction down to the exact day the mortgage cleared. You built an exit strategy that treated me like disposable inventory."

Brenda was weeping softly into her hands, rocking back and forth on the sofa. The realization that her brother’s grand financial schemes had completely backfired—and that her own livelihood had been staked on a foundation of sand—seemed to have finally broken her spirit.

Thomas sank slowly into the armchair opposite me, his shoulders slumping. The aggressive posture vanished, replaced by the posture of a man calculating his remaining options and finding every single one of them closed.

"What do you want?" he asked, the words dragged out of him like teeth being pulled.

"I want a clean, uncontested dissolution filed tomorrow morning," I said, opening my laptop again and sliding a printed document across the table. "You sign over the deed to the house, clear of any secondary liens. You sign a full relinquishment of any claims against my consulting revenue past, present, and future. And you write a formal statement to Sterling & Sterling's compliance department taking full, sole responsibility for the Meridian Holdings structure, completely clearing Brenda of any criminal liability."

Thomas stared at the paper, his eyes scanning the clauses. "If I take sole responsibility for Meridian, the compliance board will terminate me immediately. I'll lose my partnership track. I'll lose my license."

"That sounds like a consequence of your own choices," I said coldly. "You can sign the confession and walk away with your freedom, or you can let Amanda hand the entire audio and financial archive to the federal prosecutor's office by tomorrow noon. Choose."

Thomas looked up from the paper, his eyes burning with a mixture of hatred and defeat. For a second, I thought he might lunge across the table, or try one last pathetic bluff. But he looked at his sister weeping on the couch, looked at the quiet, unyielding set of my jaw, and realized there was no escape hatch left.

He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a heavy fountain pen, and uncapped it with a sharp click.
